Bom in Egilsá in the beautiful district of Skagafjörður in Iceland, she is the daughter of Anna Sigurbjörg Gunnars- dóttir from Keflavíik in Hegranesi and of Guðmundur L. Fridfinnsson, one of Iceland’s most esteemed authors. Sigurlaug loved music since her child- hood and studied in her native Reykjavík before she debuted as a soloist on the radio at age 18. She con- tinued her studies in Reykjavík and then went on to Europe with her musical training and studied with some of the most outstanding teachers. During a long and successful European career, Sally performed before dignitaries and heads of state in Stockholm, Austria, Italy and West Germany, and performed in operatic productions in many of Europe’s Opera houses. In addition to her concert and opera appearances, Sally Rosinkranz has been heard and seen by millions on radio and television all over Europe and the United States. The first compact disc, My Songs to Your Heart, contains selections of some of the most beloved songs of her home- land, as well as songs by Rossini and Schubert. These selections will touch the hearts of Icelanders and those of Icelandic descent. Sally’s admiring fans were so impressed with her first compact disc that they wanted to hear more of her magnificent voice. Next came Forever With Love, with twelve selections; three songs by Franz Schubert, the beloved “Jeg elsker dig” by Grieg, two Swedish folk songs, three poems by her father set to music by Kurt Wiklander, one of Sweden’s most famous contemporary composers and three works by the late Dr. Hallgrímur Helgason with lyrics by Einar Bened- iktsson, Steinn Steinarr and Sally’s father. Compact disc three, Sally, quickly followed. The listener is treated to more delights by Sally, four selections by Brahms, Rossini, Reger and Mendels- sohn (“Auf Flugeln des Gesanges”) and eleven selections by Icelandic com- posers, including the popular lullaby “Þey, þey og ró, ró” by Björgvin Gudmundsson, the hauntingly beautiful “Ave Maria” by Sigvaldi Kaldalóns, as well as seven songs by the late Dr. Hallgrímur Helgason, certainly a fine tribute to the composer who died two years ago in his native countiy, Iceland. What a treat for any Icelander or anyone of Icelandic descent to listen to the beautiful voice of “Iceland’s Night- ingale.” Whether these beloved Icelandic songs are known to you or whether you want to hear and learn more about the songs your parents, grandparents or great-grandparents sang and loved, these compact discs are a must for you. And even if your heritage isn’t Icelandic, here is a chance to leam about these musical “treasures” of Iceland. All three are available in com- pact disc form; My Songs to Your Heart is also available in cassette. Once you have heard Sally Rosin- kranz sing, you will certainly be looking forward to compact disc four and five which will soon be available. Minnist BETEL ! ERFÐASKRÁM YÐAR Sally (Sigurlaug) Rosinkranz Iceland’s Nightingale by Dr. George Hanson Port Townsend, WA s a toddler in her native Iceland, “Næturgali” (Nightingale) be- came the name which she was known by for her endless singing. Opera singer and coloratura soprano, Sally (Sigurlaug) Rosinkranz, has already recorded three albums and is continuing the recordings which have left her in a wake of rave reviews. Currently in the midst of recording two new CD albums, Mrs. Rosinkranz feels a positive reaction to juggling a busy performance schedule with her recordings. “My time in the stu- dio has actually gone extremely well, I did not think that I would have enough time to do both ends but I have been so energized from performing that I feel like I am still on stage in the studio, it has all been a real blessing.” One of the albums will consist of opera music and the other of religious music. When asked what the future holds she smiles and responds to my “wake” analogy and says that it is where the boat takes her. She feels recording is an important priority for her, although she still loves singing opera and giving concerts. Concurrently, she is working on performing as a soloist singing Mozart’s Grand Mass in C Minor, a formidable undertaking, for yet another CD featuring the famous Los Angeles Camerata Symphony Orchestra and choir. This past summer Sally was asked to open the Los Angeles Dodger game singing the U.S. National Anthem. The game which was attended by 55,000 fans, was a tribute to the late Mickey Mantle of New York Yankee fame. Sally has lived in Califomia for the past 14 years and has been a resident of Sally (Slgurlaug) Rosinkranz at Wittshire Ebell Concert Hall Malibu, California for the past seven years. She is an active member of the community, a member of the Malibu Cultural Arts Committee and co-ordina- tor of an after school music program for elementary schoolchildren.
