Nova Scotian visits New Iceland
By Dilla Narfason
IMarshall Burgess, from Hali-
fax, Nova Scotia, visited New
> Iceland during his recent trip to
Manitoba. He has always been aware
of his Icelandic roots, dating back to
1879 when his great-grandfather,
Erlendur Höskuldson, and great-
grandmother, GuðlaugStephansdóttir,
left Iceland to settle in Nova Scotia.
After a trip to Iceland with his fa-
ther, Marshall decided to research the
family story, along with those of the

named “The Markland Icelanders: An
Immigration Experiment.” Marshall
was pleased to have the ppportunity
to share information with Nelson
Gerrard, historian for the Icelandic
National League, as well as Tammy
Axelsson, Executive Director of the
Icelandic National League, and oth-
ers during his short stay there. He was
delighted with his first visit to “New
Iceland,” and couldn’t believe the
good weather, with temperatures ris-
ing into the 20s in April. □
