The Snorri Program representatives
Almar Grímsson, Chairman of the
Foundation and Ásta Sól Kristjánsdóttir,
Project Manager were in Gimli last sum-
mer to introduce the program. At their
booth past participants distributed
brochures, application forms and
answered questions about on their expe-
riences in Iceland. They also distributed
brochures in the parade, running along

the heat of the Monday.
An important accomplishment was
the establishment of the Snorri Alumni
Association. It was formally announced
on festival Sunday when a special cere-
mony was held in Gimli Park. Harley
Jónasson, President of the Icelandic
Festival, Hjálmar W. Hannesson
Ambassador of Iceland in Canada, and
Eiður Guðnason, Consul General of
Iceland in Winnipeg were present.
Sixteen participants took part, eight
from the year 2000 and eight from
2001. Helgi Gunnar Thorvaldson from
Edmonton (2001) and Adam
Sommerfeld from Ottawa reflected on
their experiences of the program, and
Helgi did so, very impressively, in
Icelandic. Tricia Signý McKay, presi-
dent of the newly formed association,
spoke of the aims and objectives of the
group. They are:
1. To foster and main-
tain cultural links and
family ties between
youth of common cul-
tural goals and interests
in Iceland and North
America.
2. To promote aware-
ness of the program
itself and the opportuni-
ties it offers.
3. To build a stronger youth presence
in the North American Icelandic
Community beginning with the
Icelandic National League.
We hope that the formation of this
association will provide an informative
and accessible resource for young peo-
ple who wish to become involved with
and find out more about the cultural
relationships between Iceland and
North America, while, at the same time
uniting past participants and serving as
a means of preserving our shared expe-
riences and to foster communications.
These objectives are not carved in
stone and amendments to them will be
made as soon as communication has
been made easier between all forty-four
members. A website is now in progress,
and this will involve some live web
chat. The address is:
