Lögberg-Heimskringla - 01.02.2002, Síða 7
Lögberg-Heimskringla • Föstudagur 1 Febrúar 2002 • 7 Falcons continued from page 1 it is important to maintain a high profile for the team of second generation Icelandic immigrants which won Canada's first-ever gold. "Utah is home to the first wave of Icelandic settlers to North America. Utahns of Icelandic descent remain active and positively effervescent in their support of all things Icelandic," he says. And it's not just Utahns who are ral- lying to support the Falcons Forever Campaign. Ron Goodman, nephew of Falcons' right wing Mike Goodman, says he was shocked by the Canadian Hockey Association's disregaid for his- tory when it named the Toronto Granites as Canada's first Olympic win- ner. "It's an injustice. They are not fol- lowing the historical data that is in every Olympic document," says Goodman, a group publisher for Roger's Communications in Toronto. Goodman surmises that it all comes down to money. "If Team Canada wins gold, their jerseys will be replicated for sale. Whoever owns the rights to the Granite's logo stands to make a lot of money from licensing agreements," he says. Lloyd Penwarden, a hockey history buff who has written two books about the Falcons, says the eastern establish- ment wants all the glory and all the money for itself. "It's impossible for the CHA not to have known about the Falcons because so much has been written about the team. Either the CHA's research depart- ment is completely inept or someone is deliberately ignoring the facts," says Penwarden, who grew up in Selkirk and now lives in Kingston, Ontario. Dan Johnson, president of the UIA, accepting tax-deductible donations on behalf of the Falcons' Forever cam- paign, says he is still requésting dona- lions. "We have raised enough money to take the exhibit to Salt Lake City," says Johnson, "but this is an ongoing project. We want the exhibit to have a permanent home in Manitoba, yet to be sufficiently mobile so that schools, clubs and other organizations interested in Canadian history can utilize it as an educational tool. To accomplish this, we will require continued commitment from the Icelandic community." At a Falcons Forever press confer- ence hosted by City of Winnipeg coun- cillor Garth Steek in early February, Johnson said the "United Icelandic Appeal recognizes the Utah Olympics as an opportunity to celebrate, support and promote Icelandic culture in North America." To contribute to the Falcons Forever Campaign, contact Kathy Arnason at (204) 642-9868 phone; (204) 642-9382 fax; uia@mts.net; or mail The United Icelandic Appeal, P.O. box 102, 94 lst Avenue, Gimli, MB, R0C 1B1.
