Icelandic Whist
O. A. Olson
Gimli, MB
This was a favourite
game, especially during
the Depression years and in
the 40’s as an alternative to
bridge. To play the game
well, knowledge of bridge
was.'of course, very useful.
Icelandic Whist is a good
game because, bridge-wise,
a bad hand is as good as a
good hand.
The basic mechanics of
the game are:
Dealing: the cards may be
dealt one at a time or many
at a time; the deal goes
around the table as in
bridge.
Bidding: The person to the
left of the dealer opens the
bidding and leads; there are
only four bids and the aces
can be either high or low
depending on the bid; if no
one bids by the time the bid
comes back to the dealer,
that poor wretch must bid
something.
Playing the Hand: No
hand is “thrown in.” East
and West play as partners,
as do North and South, as
in regular whist or bridge.
The hand is played in the
highest bid. The high card
always wins as in “no
trump.”
The bids and their rank:
Nolo (nóló) - the lowest
bid. The bidder contracts
to take less than six tricks
(the book).
For every trick the
opposition takes over the
book, the bidder gets four
points. For every trick th^
bidders take over the book,
the opposition is rewarded
with eight points. Aces are
low.
Grand (grand) - the sec-
ond highest bid. The bidder
contracts to take more than
six tricks.
The hand is played as
regular no-trump. The bid-
der wins four points for
each trick over six (the
book), and loses eight
points for every trick under
six. Aces are high.
Half Solo (hálf) - the third
highest bid. The bidder
contracts to take no more
than QNE trick
His/her partner folds up
his/her hand and bidder
takes on the other two
alone.
Person on the bidder’s
left leads and from then on
the winner of the trick
leads. The bidder always
plays last except if he/she
wins a trick - this is the
only time the bidder will
lead. The hand ends if and
when the bidder takes a
second trick. The reward
for rnaking the contract is
30 points. A penalty of 60
is awarded to the opponents
if the contract is not ful-

filled. Aces are low.
Whole Solo (heil) - the
highest bid. The bidder
contracts to take NO tricks.
Otherwise the hand is
played in the same manner
as in Half Solo except that
the reward and penalty are
doubled.
This game shouldn’t be
lost.

Michelle phones Anna and asks her if she wants to go skiing with her and
Anna agrees. Michelle asks her brother, Richard, if he can drive them to
Birds Hill Park so they can go skiing. He decides that it isn’t such a crazy
idea and asks his dad to lend him the car and phones a few of his friends and
invites them along. They leave on Saturday morning around ten and arrive at
Birds Hill Park around quarter to eleven. The girls decide to take the short-
est route, which is about six kilometers, but the boys go on a longer trail and
they decide to meet at the parking lot around twelve.
Anna and Michelle go Skiing
Anna: Við skulum fara hægt á stað svo við verðum ekki of þreyttar strax. Lets start off slowly so that we won’t be tired right away.
Michelle: Það er góð hugmynd. That’s a good idea.
Anna: Bless strákar. Sjáum ykkur á eftir. Bye boys, see you later.
Michelle: Sjáðu, þama er íkorni. Look, there is a squirrel.
Anna: Er hann ekki sætur. Isn’t he sweet?
Michelle: Þama eru tveir í viðbót. There are two more.
Anna: Já, þetta er auðvitað heil fjölskylda. Yes, it is of course a whole family.
Michelle: Já, örugglega. Yes, definitely.
Anna: Fynnst þér ekki skíðabrautin góð? Don’t you think the ski trail is good?
Michelle: Alveg svakalega fín. Just, terribly good.
Anna: Enda er margmennt hér í dag. And therefore it is crowded here today.
Michelle: Veðrið er líka svo flott. The weather is also great.
Anna: Já, mér er þá þegar orðið of heitt. Yes, I am already too hot.
Michelle: Þú getur bara farið úr úlpunni. You can just take your parka off.
Anna: Þá verður mér of kalt. Then I’ 11 be too cold.
Michelle: Við skulum stoppa og fá okkur að drekka. Komstu ekki með vatn? Lets stop and have a drink. Didn’t you bring water?
