Congratulations Elva
Elva Jónasson
The Canada-Iceland
Foundation announces
that Elva Jónasson has been
awarded the Heiðmar
Björnsson Scholarship. It is
awarded to a person studying
in the Department of Icelandic
at the University of Manitoba.
The recipient is chosen by the
Department.
Elva (nee Olafson)
Jónasson, born in Riverton,
MB spent her childhood in
Riverton, Bissett, Winnipeg
and then back in Riverton.
Married to Steini Jónasson
from Geysir, they had three
sons and two daughters. Their
sons, Gregory, Mark and Brent
died in their teens as a result of
muscular dystrophy. Their
older daughter Marina has a
son, Evan and a daughter,
Kaitlin. Kendra, their
youngest, lives at home with
them.
Elva has always enjoyed
painting, particularly the
painting and decorating of
porcelain. She also enjoys
Rosemaling, a Norwegian folk
art, and has painted several
trunks and other objects, some
with scenes from Iceland.
Elva is a charter member
of the Winnipeg China
Painters, the Manitoba
Porcelain Artists and the
Porcelain Artists of Canada,
and has taught porcelain paint-
ing for many years. She is cur-
rently on the Board of
Directors for the Lögberg-
Heimskringla, also the
Icelandic National League of
North America and a member
of the Icelandic Festival
Committee.
Studying Icelandic at the
University of Manitoba ful-
filled a lifelong dream of
working towards a major in
Icelandic Studies. She was one
of four students who were
awarded $1000 CAD towards
a trip to Iceland upon the com-
pletion of her third year of
Icelandic Language in 2002.
Elva is the granddaughter
of Kristján and Ingibjörg (nee
Tómasdóttir Jónasson)
Olafson and of Sveinn and
Kristín (nee Olson)
Thorvaldson of Riverton.

Anna Katrín Guðbrandsdót-
tir, a student at
Menntaskóli Akureyri (MA),
won at the song competition,
which was held at the Akureyri
Sport Complex on Saturday,
March 29th.
Anna Katrín melted the
hearts and minds of the judges
and audience with a brand new
arrangement of the beautiful
popular folk poetry by

Vatnsenda Rósa; which the
composer, Jón Asgeirsson,
made immortal. Two boys
from MA, Styrmir Hauksson
and Ólafur Haukur Ámason,
worked together this winter
and arranged the verses anew
with magnificent results. With
Anna Katrín on stage was a
string orchestra which included
musicians Björk Óskarsdóttir,
María Hrund Stefánsdóttir,
Ragnheiður Korka Jónsdóttir
and Tomasz Kolosowski.
Anna Katrín’s seventeenth
birthday happened to be March
30th and the singer, Birgitta
Haukdal, who was one of the
judges, informed the assembly
of this fact, and the two thou-
sand audience sang Happy
Birthday to honour the winner.
“This is the best thing that
has ever happened to nte. I have
been waiting for this for a long
time,” said Anna Katrín tri-
'umphant in an interview with
Morgunblaðið shortly after the
finals were made known and
she had sung the victory song

again. “Yes, I have had this
dream of becoming a singer for
a long time, but I think I’ll still
become a doctor,” she then said.
Anna Katrín is in her first year
at MA and plans to take natural
sciences next year. She did not
contradict the reporter when he
said that she would probably
become a singing doctor. She
plans to become a pediatrícian,
so her singing will definitely
come in handy.
Sigþór Ámason, represent-
ing Fjölbrautaskóli Suðurlands,
was in second place. He also
received a prize for best stage
performance.
Third prize went to Elísabet
Eyþórsdóttir from Borgarholts-
skóli. She is the daughter of
musicians Ellen íCristjánsdóttir
and Eyþór Gunnarsson.
Elísabet sang a song composed
by her sister, Sigríður
Eyþórsdóttir, the singer in the
band Santiago. Many of those
who performed at the competi-
tion were terrific and obviously
there is a lot of talent to be
found at the various colligates
in Iceland.
The judges mentioned that
their role had been a tough one
the singers Birgitta Haukdal and
Pálmi Gunnarsson.
For example, the represen-
tative of the technical colle-
giate in Akureyri, Stefán
Jakobsson, attracted a lot of
well-deserved attention, but
did not find favor with the
judges. Once he would likely
have won the competition.
