Suzuki Exchange Trip to Iceland
The Tonskoli Suzuki
School in Reykjavík, have
extended and invitation to The
MacPhail Suzuki Orcestra
from Minneapolis, MN to
travel to Iceland in June 2004
for a week of musical and cul-
tural activities.
This invitation grew out of
friendship formed when two
Icelandic students, Hulda
Jónsdóttir, twelve, and her
brother Ragnar, ten, took
music lessons at the MacPhail
School of Music during the
2002 and 2003 school year.
About forty MacPhail stu-
dents, seven faculty and thirty
-• other familv members plan to
travel to Iceland.
Throughout the 2003 to
2004 school year, the
Minnesota students are learn-
ing about Icelandic language,
culture, history and geography
and will soon be assigned pen
pals from the Tonskioli Suzuki
School. They are preparing
music to preform for and with
the Icelandic students. In
Iceland, MacPhail students
will stay with host families
and participate in a range of
musical, social and education-
al activities.
In the summer of 2005,
students from the Tonskioli
Suzuki School will travel to
Minneapolis for another week
of musical and cultural con-
nections. To support this
opportunity for music and cul-
tural exchange a benefit con-
cert has been schéduled. All
are welcome.
The MacPhail Suzuki
Orchestra will be joined by
author, poet, teqcher and
musician Bill Holm on
Sunday, 2 May at 3 pm at the
Church of the Holy Name,
3637 llth Avenue South,
Minneapolis. Tickets will be
available at the door.

Volcanoes Inside and Out: a Geological and
Landscape Documentation Field Experience

Field Course in Iceland -
Summer 2004
he Department of
Géosciences in the College
of Science and Mathematics,
and the Depaitment of Art, in
the College of Arts,
Humanities, and Social
Sciences at NDSU will co-
sponsor a field course for two
weeks in July-August, 2004, on
the geology and photographic
landscape documentation of
Iceland.
Participants will investigate
selected areas of Iceland,
including the nearby Westmann
Islands. All participants will
contribute to either a field guide
book to be assembled before the
trip, or to a photographic docu-
mentatation to be assembled
after the trip.
The trip will take place
from July 24 to August 8, 2004.
The study tour will provide an
intensive introduction to
Icelandic vulcanism, geology,
and landforms, and to Nordic
prehistory in Iceland. Trip lead-
ers will be Dr. Bemhardt Saini-
Eidukat, Associate Professor of
Geosciences at NDSU, and
Wayne Gudmundson, Professor
of Mass Communications at
Minnesota State University
Moorhead.
Itinerary
We leave the Minneapolis/
St.Paul Inter-national Airport
on July 24. We will meet with
local experts and spend the next
two days on the volcanically
active Westmann Islands. After
retuming to the main island, we
will then spend two days hik-
ing, observing, and discussing
the Landmannalaugar area
before heading over the high-
land road of Fjallbak Nyrdra to
the glacial area of Skaftafell
National Park.

Oldest Icelander
Iceland's oldest person,
Guðfinna Einarsdóttir, cele-
brated her 107th birthday yes-
terday. Ms. Einarsdóttir, who
lives with her daughter in
Reykjavík, celebrated the big
day with friends and family.
“It’s no big deal,” Ms.
Einarsdóttir said when asked
about how she felt about being
Iceland’s oldest citizen.
Guðfinna is in good
health, although she says her
eyesight is diminishing. She
walks around the apartment
every day, but rarely goes out-
side.

in Reyðarfjörður
Drilling for hot water in
Reyðarfjörður, in the east
fjords, has been successful.
Experimental holes were
drilled at the base of the fjord
and water at forty-three
degrees centigrade at five liters
per second is pouring out of it.

We take a boat tour on the
Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon
before heading inland to the
spectacular crater lake of Askja.
We then visit the geothermal
and other natural features of the
Lake Mývatn area, the waterfall
at Dettifoss, and the famous
Geysir area. The historically
important Þingvellir national
park and a bath at the world
famous Blue Lagoon will round
out the trip. Then it is back to
Reykjavík and home! (Itinerary
subject to change)
The cost of the trip will be
approximately $3100. This
amount will include airfare,
misc. fees, thirteen days land
transportation in Iceland with
bus and local guide, boat tour
on the Jökulsárlón glacier
lagoon, ten nights camping
(tents provided), youth hostel
accommodations in Reykjavík,
eleven days full boai'd, cook and
kitchen bus/trailer along to pre-
pare meals (group participates
in washing dishes), and entry
fee to the Blue Lagoon. Most of
this sum will be charged up
front as a set fee (e.g., fees, land
package, transportation). Costs
not included will be: laundry,
tips, airfare from a city other
than St. Paul/Minneapolis, sou-
venirs, travel insurance, pass-
port fee, and other items not
specifically included above.
