Lögberg-Heimskringla - 03.12.2004, Blaðsíða 5
Lögberg-Heimskringla • Föstudagur 3. desember 2004 • 5 Clark new leader of the Canadian Club of Iceland Alice Ólöf Clark is the new leader of the Canadian Club of Iceland. “I have been so much involved, and when Peter Pelerson moved back to Canada I took over,” she says. The mission of the club (http://frontpage.simnet.is/ca nadian.club/) is to serve as a focal point for Canadians liv- ing in Iceland, to welconie new Canadians arriving in Iceland ahd to promote and foster Canadian identity, unity and values. The main club events are Canada Day and Thanksgiving. “I have lived in Iceland for about 12 years and always been very involved in Canadian matters,” Alice says. She is an artist from Ottawa and there she met her husband Kári Eiríksson, who was studying arcitecture in PHOTO: KENT lARUS BJÖRNSSON Alice Ólöf Clark Canada. “Many Icelanders who have studied in Canada are members of our club but it is mainly made up of Cana- dians and their families in Iceland,” she says. Kent Lárus Björnsson, from Fraserwood, Manitoba, is a new board member of the Icelandic National League in Iceland. He is the first Canadi- an living in Iceland to become a board member of the INL. Eric Stefanson, in Winnipeg, is also a member of the board. Over 100 Canadians live in Iceland and Kent has lived there since August 2001. He works as an electronics techni- cian at Menntaskólinn við Hamrahlíð, a secondary high school in Reykjavík. He and Vilmundur Kristjánsson run the travel consulting company Nordic Trails (www.nordic- trails.org) and the Nordic Trails’ Canada House. He has been a tour guide with groups of Icelanders travelling in North America and will contin- ue to do that for the INL of Ice- land next summer. Recently, he took over the website of the INL (www.inl.is) and he has updat- ed it a lot. “These things keep me busy,” he says and points out that the INL’s website is now partly in English as well. “For example, the tours play an important role in the INL and the schedule is now available on the website. People can look it up and see when a given group is going to be in Calgary, or Edmonton, to name only two places. Just remember to check back for updated infor- mation.” Kent is becoming more and more Icelandic. He likes it in Iceland and has no plans to move back to Canada in the near future. “I have not given it a thought but I’ll never give up my Canadian citizenship,” he says. Back in school again Teaching in elementary schools in Iceland resumed in the middle of November after an eight-week-long strike. The strike meant that about 45,000 students between six and 16 years of age and about 4,000 teachers and prin- cipals were out of the schools from September 20 to Novem- ber 15. An agreement could not be reached and as a result Parliament passed a law requiring slrikers to return to work. from Frederickson ♦ Cooper ARCHITECTS Greetl GEORGE FREDERICKSON MRAIC, M.A.A. 10-395 Berry Street Winnipeg Manitoba R3J 1N6 Ph: (204) 831-7138 Fax: (204) 831-7148 E-mail: george@fca.mb.ca PHOTO: STEINÞÓR GUÐBJARTSSON Baldur Kristjánsson, Dagur Gíslason and Þórir Jensen in Melaskóli, Reykjavík, were happy to be back in school.
