Dennis Stefanson awarded the
Individual Big Heart Award
Recently Dennis Stefanson
of Gimli was awarded the 2004
Individual Big Hearl Award for
his involvement wilh the Gimli
Heart and Stroke Foundation
Annual Golf Tournament. He
has been a participant, co-chair-
man and chairman since its in-
ception about 12 years ago. The
Heart and Stroke Foundation of
Manitoba, Canada, presented
the award at its annual meeting
along with the Business Big
Heart Award and the Organiza-
tion Big Heart Award.
The Big Heart Awards were
developed to recognize the ac-
complishments of Manitobans
who assist in the promotion and
delivery of the Heart and Stroke
Foundation’s mission state-
ment. The award is presented
to individuals, businesses or
organizations that demonstrate
leadership and serve as role
models in their community.
“I am indeed honoured to
have received this award,” Den-
nis Stefanson says. “I sincerely
thank the committee members,
Gordy and Joyce Peterson,
Bev Stevens, Wally Shewchuk,
George Walker, Laura Sig-
mundson and my wife Claire
because they do the work to
make me look good.”
Under Dennis’s guidance,
the golf tournament has grown
and in each of the past three

fanson, daughter of Eric and Myrna Stefanson of Winnipeg
received the award on Dennis Stefanson’s behalf from Dector
Harvey, Chairman of the Board of the Heart and Stroke Foun-
dation of Manitoba.

raised for the Heart and Stroke
Foundation of Manitoba.
Boston Pizza received the
Business Award and Elmdale
School of Steinbach the Orga-
nization Award.
Dennis was unable to at-
tend the annual meeting. His
granddaughter Nicole Wash-
ington and his niece Kristy Ste-
fanson received the award on
his behalf.

Raffle winners announced
The Icelandic National
League of North America held
its fundraising raffle draw on
January 16. There were four
winners.
The first draw, a framed
print by Cal Jolley of Utah, went
to Lynne Thorkelsson of Port
Perry, ON. The second draw,
a five-volume set of the Com-
plete Saga of Icelanders, went
to Mark Cassidy of Virden, MB.
The third draw, a 27” Toshiba
TV, went to Lynn Brooks of Cal-
gary, AB.
The fourth draw. a trip for
two to Iceland from Minneapo-
lis, plus $1000 cash, two nights
at Hotel Borg, a one day tour
around Reykjavík, admission to
Blue Lagoon and transport frorn
and to airport at Keflavík by
Luxury Adventures ehf., went to
Rita Hiorth of Willowdale, ON.
The INL sold 3,092 tickets
and raised about $13,500 after
expenses.

NDCA offers course in Iceland June 25 - 28
The North Dakota Council
on the Arls (NDCA) is olTering
a course on folklore this sum-
mer in Iceland.
The course is sponsored,
funded, and initiated by the
NDCA in cooperation with
the Icelandic Communities
Association, Mountain, North
Dakota. State Folklorist Troyd
Geist is the primary instructor
and coordinator. The class will
be available for course credit
through North Dakota State
University and the University
of Iceland.
“Northem Lights: Folklore
and Folk Art in North Dakota
and Iceland — A Comparison”
will run June 25 - 28.
Registrants from the Unit-
ed States and Canada will fly
out of Minneapolis on Icelan-
dairJune 23, arriving in Iceland
on June 24 and then travelling
to Hofsos that same day. The
return flight from Iceland will
beJune 29.
The course will be taught at
The Icelandic Emigration Cen-
ter in Hofsós, and aims to com-
pare and contrast the folklore
and folk arts of North Dakota
and Iceland, as well as explore
the role and meaning these tra-
ditions have in modem society.
The class is open to the
general public, university
students of all majors, and
teachers in both countries. It
is meant to encourage greater
interaction and understanding
between Icelanders and people
from North Dakota, a state wilh
a large population of people of
Icelandic descent.
Costs for participants from
North Dakota/United States
and Canada:$ 1,700 (US). The
price includes registration,
airfare from Minneapolis to
Keflavík/Reykjavík, bus from
Reykjavík to Hofsós, lodging
for five nights in Hofsós, noon
meal for the four days of the
class, an evening meal in Hof-
sós the night before the course
begins, a breakfast in Hofsós
the morning after the course
ends, exhibit fees, fieldtrip,
university recording and credit
fees, and course books/materi-
als. )
The deadline for registra-
tion and receipt of full pay-
mentfor students from the Unit-
ed States and Canada is March
31, 2005. There is a limited
enrolment of 30 participants;
15 from North Dakota/United
States and Canada and 15 from
Iceland. Others interested can
be placed on a waiting list.
