Recently Her Excellency Adrienne Clarkson,
the Governor General of Canada, announced
that Donald K. Johnson is to receive of the Or-
der of Canada. Steinþór Guðbjartsson talked
to him in Toronto.
The award is primarily for
Don’s work in philan-
thropy, or as described
in the announcement: “Former
Vice-Chairman of BMO Nes-
bitt Bums, Donald Johnson has
lent his financial expertise to a
variety of not-for-profit organi-
zations, strengthening the so-
cial fabric of our country. His
great determination and per-
severance brought about ma-
jor changes to the [Canadian]
Income Tax Act, which intro-
duced new incentives that have
helped to revitalize the chari-
table sector with an infusion of
funds. An active volunteer, he
has worked tirelessly in sup-
port of the National Ballet of
Canada, the Eye Research In-
stitute of Canada, as well as the
Universities of Westem Ontario
and Manitoba.”
A 10-year crusade

the Vice-Chairman of Nesbitt-
Burns, one of Canada’íleading
investment banking firms. He
joined its predecessor, Bums
Bros. & Denton, in 1963. He
remains as a consultant to the
company and is in his office
every day. In 1997 he was the
recipient of the Outstanding
Volunteer Award presented by
the National Society of Fund-
raising Executives. At that time
it was noted that during the two
previous years he had chaired a
$12-million capital campaign to
create a new home for the Na-
tional Ballet of Canada. It was
also pointed out that his lead-
ership led to an announcement
in the 1997 federal budget, re-
ducing the capital gains tax by
50% on gifts of publicly-traded
securities.
Since then, he has been
working hard on convincing the
Canadian govemment to elimi-
nate the remaining capital gains
tax on gifts of listed securities.
In his submission in December
2004 to the Standing Senate
Committee on Banking, Trade
and Commerce, Don pointed
out that “Canada’s competitive
position is dependent upon our
ability to attract and retain ‘the
best and the brightest’ people in
both the for-profit and not-for-
profit sectors. Our charities, in-

for the Olson/Johnson Travel Scholarship for Study in lceland, C$3000. This
scholarship is to assist students who wish to study lcelandic at the University of
lceland. The student(s) has to be registered at the University of Manitoba in a
degree credit programme. The student(s) also needs to have been accepted to
an lcelandic language study course in lceland or into the exchange programme
with the Universify of lceland.
