Holly Garrett has been an
active member of the Icelan-
dic Canadian Club of Toronto
(ICCT) for about 15 years. She
will take over as the president
of the club at the annual general
meeting in May.
“My Icelandic amma,

settled in Ontario and I got in-
terested in her story,” Holly says

about her involvement in the
club. “She was from ísafjörður
and emigrated to Canada with
her sister Sigríður, who died
shortly after they arrived, and
their parents Sigurður Pálma-
son and Sólveig Jónsdóttir in
1892. I was very close to her
and my Icelandic roots are
very important to me. I joined
the club in order to continue to
explore my roots and to be part
of the community of Icelandic-
Canadians.”
Her father, Manford Pal-
mason Ralph, died just over 40
years ago. Her mother, Olive
Mary (Burrowes) Ralph is of
Irish descent and lives in her
own house at the age of 94.
Being a retired teacher
means that now Holly has more
time to volunteer for the Icelan-
dic community and share her
experience with others. “Dur-
ing the last few years Icelan-
dair has offered what they call
‘Midweek Getaway,’ a package
deal to Iceland, and I have not
only bought the package but
also brought several groups
with me to Iceland, usually in
March,” she says.
Many Canadians of Icelan-
dic descent live in Ontario and
although many participate in
the ICCT’s events, Holly wants
to get more people involved
if possible. She says that they
need to encourage groups in
areas outside of Toronto to de-
velop the focus for their area.
“Our main problem is that
the club members and oth-
ers interested in the Icelandic
heritage are spread out all over
the province. Yet, the interest
is there and I would like to
see as many come together for
special occasions as possible.
That is what we have to work
on and our next test is the Ice
Fest in Kinmount in the middle
of July. That is a family fest,
not only for people in Ontario
but from the whole continent. I
am fortunate to be coming on-
board just as Ice Fest gets off
the ground. It will be our ma-
jor focus for the year and will
help us to foster not only our
understanding of our history
and our connections in On-
tario, but our connections with
the early settlements across
the continent.”
