Dennis Stefanson is the man behind the success
of the Gimli Heart and Stroke Golf Tournament.
The event has grown bigger with every year since it
started in 1993.

The Gimli Heart and Stroke
Golf Toumament has raised
over $100,000 for the Heart and
Stroke Foundation of Manitoba
and it is one of the main fund-
raising events for the Founda-
tion.
Dennis Stefanson has been
instrumental in organizing thé
event that is always held the
third Saturday in August. Re-
cently the toumament was held
for the 13th time and it raised
about $14,000. “This is a team
effort and my committee mem-
bers make my life easy,” says
Dennis.
The toumament has grown
bigger with every year since it
started in 1993. Last August
it was held at the Links at the
Lake Golf Course in Gimli for
the first time and it looks like
the right place for the touma-
ment in the near future. “Every-
body liked it in Gimli and we
have booked the course August
19, 2006,” says Dennis.
This year 120 golfers (30
teams of four) participated in
the toumament and that is a
record. The main sponsors and
donors were Manitoba Tele-
com Services, Manitoba Pub-
lic Insurance, Wellington West
Capital, Neil Bardal Family Fu-
neral Counsellors and the Links
at the Lake Golf Course. The
toumament was established in
the memory of Eric Stefanson
and Frank Amason, who were
64 years old when they died be-
cause of heart disorders.
Every year the Heart and
Stroke Foundation presents
their Big Heart Awards which
are “presented to individuals,
businesses and organizations
that demonstrate leadership and
serve as role models in their
community.” Last year the In-
dividual Big Heart Award was
presented to Dennis Stefanson
for his involvement with the
toumament as participant, co-
chairman and chairman since
its inception.
This is one of the touma-
ments where participation
means everything. Yet, every-
body gets a prize and the best
teams get the big trophies.
The Frank Amason Memo-
rial Runner-up Trophy went
to the Amason’s A-team (Joey
Wilkinson, Russell Amasbn,
Robert Arnason and Les Vann)
and the Éric Stefanson Memo-
rial Championship Thropy was
won by the Amason’s B-team
(Ross Bailey, Barry Ama-
son, Rhett Amason and Jamie
Plesh.

Running
in honour
of Leo
Ryan Labatt, who ran a
marathon in Iccland in honour
of his late father in-law Leo
Carter has sent information
about his experience.
“On August 21,20041 ran a
full 42.2 km marathon forTeant
Diabetes Canada in Reykjavfk,
Iceland in honor of my late
father in-law Leo Carter. Leo
raised his family and farmed
with his wife Alice Carter in the
Provost area.
“When I began dating my
future wife Tina, Leo’s pres-
ence began to greatly influence
my life. His sense of humour
meant that most of the time I
spent with him, we were laugh-
ing and playing practical jokes
on each other.
“Although Leo struggled
with diabetes for nearly 40
years, tme to his strong charac-
ter he managed this disease well
for many years. As Leo’s con-
dition became more invasive in
the last years of his life it pained
Leo’s family to see him stmg-
gle. He suífered many setbacks
from the loss of his eyesight and
eventually the loss of his mobil-
ity when a leg was amputated.
“When Leo passed away in
November 2003,1 decided to do
something to remember and cel-
ebrate his life. Leo died a week
before Tina and I had a baby
named Arden Liarn ‘Leo.’ De-
spite never meeting in person,
Arden heard Leo’s voice many
times while Tina was pregnant
with him. There is no doubt that
Arden has a strong connection
to Leo as he reminds us of him
daily.
“As a way of saying thanks
to Leo and his bravery in the
many years of fighting diabe-
tes, I chose to mn a marathon
to raise funds for the Canadian
Diabetes Association (CDA).
“I trained for several
months and then the day had al-
most come to run the marathon.
During my flight to Reykjavik,
the most interesting thing hap-
pened to me. 1 asked a flight
attendant for a snack and when
she returned with the food,
she handed me a chocolate bar
named ‘Leo.’ I knew then, in
true Leo Carter style, his sense
of humour was prevailing and
he was along with me for this
joumey.

“Through the kindness of
friends in Provost and arca the
community helped raise $8,000
for the CDA. The Carter family
helped financially and emotion-
ally and Alice Carter and Bill
Carter both worked very hard to
help raise funds. Leo also was
an inspiration. ‘You are a great
spirit who will never be forgot-
ten and you will live on in our
hearts every day.’”
