Rétt áður en vér fórum frá ritstjórn Lögbergs byrjuðum vér á
því að birta þar færeyskar þjóðsögur; mörgum er hugleikið að sjá
íleira af þessum sögum og ætlum vér því að birta nokkrar þeirra
smámsaman; en eins verður það með þann bálk og aðra að hann birt-
ist ekki nauðsynlega í hverju blaði; því verður auðvitað að haga
eftir ástæðum ög því efni sem fyrir liggur og blaðinu berst.
I.
KJÖLUR BÓNDII TRÖLLANESI
Maður er nefndur Kjölur og bjó í Tröllanesi. Einhverju sinni
dreymdi hann að til hans kæmi kona og segði honum að hann ætti
að eignast átta sonu, en því fylgdi sú ógæfa að þeir yrðu allir gleyptir
af hval í fiskiróðri. Kjölur sofnaði aftur og dreymdi enn að hin sama
kona kæmi til hans; sagði hún honum þá að ef hann þegði yfir draum-
inum í þrjátíu ár mundi hann ekki rætast.
Svo segir sagan að tímar liðu og Kjölur eignaðist átta sonu eins
og draumkonan spáði honum. þeir lifðu allir, urðu fulltíða menn og
stunduðu sjóróðra. það var einhverju sinni þegar komið var fram í
þrítugasta árið frá því að Kjöl dreymdi drauminn að þeir eru allir
stunduðu sjóróðra. það var einhverju sinni þegar komið var fram á
Karlseyjarfjörð og skamt er til lands að Tröllanesi hugsar bóndi með
sjálfum sér: “Fjandinn hafi það að eg þegi nú lengur yfir draumn-
um; hann hefir enga þýðingu hvort sem er, því nú er langt liðið á
þrítugasta árið.’’
Og síðan sagði hann drauminn. En þegar hann var að enda við
draumsöguna kemur stór reiðarhvalur og gleypir bátinn með öllu
saman. Kvalinn rak síðar á Björgvin í Noregi og liafði báturinn
staðið í honum; var hann dreginn út úr honum og sátu allir menn-
imir undir árum eins og þeir gerðu þegar hvalurinn gleypti bátinn
og voru allir lifandi. þeir fóru tafarlaust til Færeyja, en svo mikið
varð Kili gamla um þennan atburð að hann flutti bú sitt frá Trölla-
nesi þangað sem nú heitir Kjalarnes í Kollafirði. Er svo frá sagt
að staðurinn hafi verið nefndur eftir Kili bónda.
Minnisvarðamálið
þeim er að fjölga bréfunum sem inn berast minnisvarða félaginu,
úr ýmsum bygðum þessa lands. Af lang flestum þeirra virðist það
Ijóst að minnisvarða málið mæti alment einkar hlýjum undirtektum,
o*g lofa flest bréfin einlægu fylgi því til stuðnings.
Undantekningarlaust er réttmæti fyrirtækisins viðurkent. það
virðist djúft greypt í meðvitund almennings að oss beri til þess brýn
skylda að sýna minningu vorra föllnu hermanna verðuga sæmd og
varanlega að halda henni vakandi.
Frá einstökum bygðum er þess getið að þær sjái ekki þörf á að
velja menn úr sínum hópi til meðráða með félaginu hér í Winnipeg.
En að heima fyrir skuli samt svo um búið að þegar til samskota komi
skuli að því unnið að fjárframlög til fyrirtækisins megi verða eins
rífleg og efni og ástæður leyfi.
Slík áheit eru félaginu hið mesta ánægjuefni, og í fullu samræmi
við það traust sem það ber til alþýðu íslendinga hvervetna í þessu
landi.
Sá orðrómur hefir borist til félagsins að til séu þeir einstakling-
ar í einni eða tveimur bygðum hér vestra, sem séu að bera út þá
grunsemd að félagið liafi fyrirtæki þetta að flokksmáli og að fyrir þá
sök sé það varhugavert að sinna því að nokkru leyti.
Félagið veit að sjálfsögðu ekki hvaðan hugsan þessi er runnin. I
En það neitar einum rómi réttmæti hennar algerlega. það hefir frá
uppruna málsins skoðað það sem þjóðmál, eins og það líka er í eðli
sínu, og engum félagsmanni hefir nokkurn tíma komið til hugar að
það hefði nokkurn skyldleik við nokkurn flokk, heldur væri það jafnt!
allra flokkamál—þjóðmál. þessvegna hefir félagið frá því fyrsta á- ]
varpað alla Islendinga og þá sem eru af Islenzkum stofni, í sambandi
við þetta mál.
í félaginu eru menn með sundurleytum skoðunum í ýmsum efn-
um. En þeir eru allir einhuga í minnisvarðamálinu, og persónulega
langar mig til þess að biðja alþjóð íslendinga að ætla engum félags-
manni það ódrengseðli að þeir eða nokkur þeirra mundi gera sér
leik að því að nota fall landa vorra á vígvöllum Frakklands og Belgíu
að flokksmáli eða á nokkurn hátt að nota það í nokkurs flokks hag
beint eða óbeint.
Engum er kunnugra um eðli minnisvarða málsins en þeim sem
bundist hafa lagalegum félagsböndum með því eina augnamiði að
sameina alla íslendinga í landi hér og afkomendur þeirra í eina óað-
skiljanlega heiid, máli þessu til framkvæmdar. Ekki eitt einasta orð
sem mælt hefir verið eða ritað um þetta mál fyrir félagsins hönd
gefur eða getur gefið hina allra minstu ástæðu til þeirrar grun-
semdar að minnisvarðamálið sé af því notað í flokks þarfir. þvert á
móti hefir það alt borið þess ljós merki að það sé skoðað eingöngu
sem þjóðmál, eins og það er í eðli sínu. þessvegna hefir félagið beint
ávörpum sínum um það til allra Islendinga og afkomenda þeirra hvar
í heimsálfu þessari sem þeir búa.
Nú þótt félaginu þyki leitt að þessi flokkshugmynd skuli hafa
fengið tilveru í nokkurs einstaklings huga, þá er því það hinsvegar
huggunarefni að það hefir ekki orðið þess vart að nokkur hafi gert
hina minnstu tilraun til þess að rökstyðja þessa grunsemd eða að
réttlæta hana á grundvelli vitsmuna eða sannsýni, og félagið trúir
því fastlega að það verði alls ekki gert. Mcira virðist óþarft að taka
fram í þessu efni að svo stöddu.
þess má geta að samkvæmt tillögu Dr. B. J. Brandsonar á fund-
inum 14. janúar s.l. að níu manna nefndin sem fundurinn þá kaus til
þess að hafa minnisvarða málið til framkvæmdar, fengi strax lög-
gilding undir lögum Manitobafylkis, og sem fundurinn samþykti í
einu liljóði, hefir nú verið löggilt af Manitoba þinginu, undir nafninu
“Minnisvarða félag Vestur-íslendinga. ”

Aths.—Minnisvarða málið er ekki flokks- eða flokkamál í eðli
sínu, en það hefir verið gert að flokkamáli og færði ritstjóri Vorald-
ar óhrekjandi rök að því í kappræðunni við B. L. Baldwinson. það
er illa farið að slíkt mál skyldi vera gert að flokkamáli, en sann-
leikann ber að viðurkenna, sagði Jón Repp.—Ritstj.

ÁgTip af fundargjörð að Kristnesi
Föstudaginn þann 7. marz, 1919
var haldinn fundur á Kristnesi,
Sask. til að ræða um þjóðernismál-
ið, samkvæmt áskorun frá skrifara
nefnda þeirrar, sem kosin var í
Winnipeg til þess að hrinda þessu
máli til íhugunnar í bygðum Is-
lendinga hér vestan hafs.
Fundarstjóri var kosinn Grímur
Laxdal og skrifari Jón S. Thor-
lacius. Á fundi þessum gjörðist
eftirfylgjandi:
1. Eftir að lesið hafði verið
upp lið fyrir iið nefndarálit það
frá Winnipcg sem birtist í “Vor-
öld” 25. febr. voru allir sammála
um það að æskilegt væri að fél-
agsskapur væri myndaður meðal
allra Islendinga hér vestan hafs til
viðhalds tungu og þjóðerni voru.
2. Að undanskilinni 7. grein
nefndarálitsins, voru allar greinar
þess samþyktar að mestu óbreytt-
ar, aftur á móti var einhuga sam-
þykt að í stað “Ársrits” sem 7. gr.
ákveður að gefið skuli út, koma
“Tímarit”
3. Var Grímur Laxdal kosinn
til að mæta á fundi þeim sem
haldast á í Winnipeg, 25. marz til
stofnunnar þessa fyrirhugaða fél-
agsskapur, en væri hann forfallað-
ur var séra Halldori Jónssyni fal-
ið að mæta þar fyrir Kristnesbygð
Á fundi þessum var minnisvarða
málinu hreyft af séra H. Jónssyni.
Samþykt var í einu hljóði ályktun
Wynyard fundarins frá 24. febr.,
sem lýst er í Voröld, 4. þ.m.
