Season’s Mail
Swamps Base
Christmastime is the time for
receiving those gifts and cards
and it is also a busy time for the
base Post Office.
Over 20 tons or 40,000 pounds
of cards and packages have ar-
rived from the U.S. and another
20 tons is expected to arrive dur-
ing this month and through
J anuary.
From the period of Nov. 15 to
Dec. 15 the Post Office mailed
out 60,000 pounds of letter mail
and packages.
Saturday the post office re-
ceived 18,000 pounds of mail for
the base.
The backlog of late mailed let-
ters, cards, and gifts do not faci-
litate the receiver or the post
office personnel.
Everyone likes to get presents
and cards from home during the
holiday season. So remember the
one who mails his Christmas gifts
and cards early is likely to have
them delivered to his loved ones
on time.
The Radio Log
by Dave Scott
Our listeners will note that due
to the Christmas Season our pro-
gramming has changed quite a
bit. A Quarter Century of Swing
has been moved to the 1:05 p.m.
slot for this week and will feature
popular Christmas and seasonal
music of the past 25 years. Many
other special shows designed for
getting everyone in the Christmas
mood will be aired for your enjoy-
ment. By now, everyone should
have a copy of our Christmas-
week schedule.
The staff of AFRS wishes to
take this opportunity to wish all
its listeners the merriest Christ-
mas and a most joyous New Year.

4White Falcon’
Draws Praise
The White Falcon staff received
some unexpected Christmas cheer
last week.
The “cheer” was in the form
of hearty congratulations from the
Chief of Information, Department
of the Navy, Washington, for
being one of thirty-eight sea ser-
vice publications named as “ex-
cellent examples” of what should
be expected in a good military
newspaper, last quarter.
Six judges — including public
information specialists, line of-
ficers, and enlisted journalists—
narrowed the field down to 100
nominations of over 500 publica-
tions. No attempt was made to
assign ranking; all papers named
were considered “winners.”
Papers were judged on the fol-
lowing: balance between local and
wider interest news; layout and
reproductions; over-all reader in-
terest; use of photographs and
artwork; utilization of filler-type
material when necessary; balanced
coverage of all aspects of the
command; and good use of avail-
able resources.
No distinction was made for
format or method of reproduction.
The judges were looking for con-
tent that was especially tailored
to the particular audience served
by the publication.
HOPE YOU DON’T MIND —We
couldn’t find Maria’s baby picture
so you will have to let this more
recent copy introduce the New
Year.
