On behalf of the people of a grateful nation I extend warmest season’s greetings and best wishes to the guardians of our freedom—the men and women of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard. I have observed with great pride and deep appreciation your steadfast devotion and readiness to defend our nation’s heritage. All Americans well realize that you supply the courage and strength necessary to protect our country and that with the help of our allies, you provide a shield against tyranny. May the joy of Christmas be yours during this festive season, and may the New Year continue to be filled with happiness and peace. Capt Robert R. Sparks Commander, Naval Forces Iceland RAdm Paul D. Buie As we close the year and re- flect upon our past accomplish- ments, we of the Iceland Defense Force can derive great satisfac- tion in knowing that we have sup- ported our country and our NATO allies unselfishly in this land of “frost and fire." This has demanded much of you and your families and asked of you a faithfulness and devotion little experienced in any other field of human endeavor. Your performance has been a source of great pride and admiration to me personally. I know it is deeply appreciated by our country and our NATO allies. It is with a deep sense af grati- tude and appreciation that I ex- tend to you and your families my (Continued on page 4.) Capt Robert R. Sparks Newfelt
