He addressed, Indiana citizens at an Indianapolis War Bond ral- ly to pay for the construction of a new cruiser to replace the Vin- cennes that was sunk in the Solo- mons. Knox pointed out that the 1943 crop of destroyers will be greater than the total of all American de- stroyers in service at the end of 1942. This Year “Each hour will add guns and shells to our arsenals in tremend- ous quantities,” stated the Navy Secretary. “The German submar- ine menace will receive ample opposition during spring and summer in the form of many new destroyer escorts that will be completed during the early pari of 1943.” Knox asserted that the $67,000,- 000,000 made available by Con- gress for naval expansion three years ago would now reap its harvest. Air Corps The Red Cross is trying to get our outfit to give another per- formance of “Buck Passing” at the Rec Center .... As yet, there hasn’t been any affirmative an- swer, as we understand the cast is playing hard to get! .... After seeing pictures of Sgt. Norelli as a female jitterbug, we wond- er how long this has been going on? ....At that, some ardent admirers were seen asking for his autograph! Sgt. Samuel Kopp. We’d like lo thank the Red Cross gals who came over to our place recently to entertain .... Just talking to a gal from New Jersey was entertainment enough .... But, in addition, Miss Reta Shaw provided much musical fun. Grasso’s imitation of Baby Snooks, and a couple’ of tall stories by the man who can tell ’em best, “Tex” Huff, plus Lou Gilbert’s humor, rounded out the evening’s fun, which ended after Miss Shaw and the boys polished- off the vocals of all the popular songs they could remember. Sgt. Don Groth. Mailmen Win Salary Boost . Effective May 1, United States mailmen will get their first jtoy raise in 15 years, it was reveal- ed in Washington this week. The bill, signed by President Roosevelt, calls for a pay boost of $300 annually for all regular postal employees, and a 15 per- cent increase in the wages of part-time workers. Mrs. Brooks Divorces Illinois Senator Charging cruelty, Mrs. Gert- rude Brooks was granted a di- vorce from Sen. C. Wayland Brooks of Illinois in Reno, Nev., this week. The divorce proceedings took only ten minutes and were held behind closed doors. The Brooks haw one son, Russell, 19. Following Uncle Sam’s advice to keep physically fit to help the war effort, two of Hollywood’s young screen starlets, Shir- ley Patterson, left, and Leslie Brooks, make frequent visits to the Hollywood Athletic club.
