Further reviews will appear movies arrive. films recently placed on distri- from time to time as additional MY REPUTATION (Warner Brothers film star- ring George Brent and Bar- bara Stanwyck) Already premiered in Ice- CIVies land, MY REPUTATION im- presses GIs with the thought- ful presentation of the pro- blem of a widow with childr- en — and her desire for fu- ture happiness. Unusually well-produced and portray- ed. Recommended. Much time was spent in art galleries and similar cultural establishments. Despite their stay overseas, the men had kept well-informed on esthetic matters and many discussions were heard on the relative me- rits of Rubens and Rembrandt—not to mention Sea- gram and Calvert. COLUMBIA UN. PROF. SAYS ILLITERACY DEPRIVING SERVICES OF 2,000,000 MEN Assailing what he calls “educational slums,” Dr. John K. Norton of Columbia University declares that illit- eracy has deprived the U.S. of at least 2,000,000 men — “enough to equal the Russi- an Army now driving to- ward Berlin.” Norton supported a hill providing Federal allot- i nts of $3,000,000 annually to aid schools, charging that millions of children will he denied “a decent education- al opportunity” as long as educational financing is done mainly by states. FALCON IN HOLLYWOOD (Columbia film starring Tom Conway and Veda . Ann Borg) Another in the well-known Falcon series — this time it’s mystery on a movie set. The usual run of Falcon films. FLAME OF THE BARBARY COAST (Republic film starring John Wayne and Ann Dvorak) This is the story of life in San Francisco at the time of the quake. Rip-roaring, wild entertainment for those who like this sort of film. CHARLIE CHAN AND THE CHINESE CAT (Monogram film featuring Sidney Toler) Mystery, guns, the usual lot of Chan action. You’ve got to like mysteries and Chan to like this one. WINGED VICTORY (20th-Cent. Fox film with Jeanne Crain and Edmond O’Brien) Rased on the Broadwav production, WINGED VICT- want to miss. ORY tells the familiar story you’ll want to of the work that goes into the making of a pilot from to his first mission. Male members of the cast Incidentally, wring Anne Baxter’s neck for the havoc she brings to Bellamy’s household. Ruth Warrick, Aline McMahon and Marie are all in the AAFV Some- McDonald all turn in top- what of a flag waver — diverting anvwav. Germany’s Defeat Will Mean No Vacation For American Troops In ETO In order to employ addi- tional large forces against the Japs at the earliest poss- ible moment following the end of the war in Europe, American troops in the ETO will he moved to the Pacific so fast that they won’t even be required to take the bulk of their equipment with them — according to an As- sociated Press report. Catholic Masks GI Stand On “Prophylactic Kits" Dissemination of birth control information to ser- vicemen on the “vastest scale in history,” may leave the U.S. without sufficient man- power to defend herself, Bishop Joseph P. Hurley of San Augustine, Fla., recent- ly told the National Cathol- ic Welfare Conference. The Bishop charged that lectures, motion pictures and “the often forced distribu- tion of so-called prophylact- ic packets” had not succeed- ed in their announced pur- pose. “However,” he stated, “they have all too often suc- ceeded in teaching undesir- able lessons of promiscuity gnd birth control.” HER LUCKY NIGHT (Universal film featuring the Andrews Sisters) Any movie with the Andr- ews Sisters doesn’t need much of a plot — and this one lives up to expectations on that score. Anyway, Patty, Maxine and Laverne can sing. DESTINY (Universal film starring Gloria Jean and Allan Curt- is) Gloria Jean reforms an ex- prisoncfr with her singing and the fresh’ country air. Gloria Jean sings well, any- wav. NOTHING BUT TROUBLE i (MGM film with Laurel and. Hardy) If you stay back in ibe hul* 1 and read a good boo1: or list-1 en‘ to the radio or write to that “special one” you’ll be just as well off. Well worth the “price of admission!” GUEST IN THE HOUSE (United Artists film starring Anne Baxter and Ralph Bell- amy) Here’s one that you don’t but j notch performances in ting, psychological tale. AND NOW TOMORROW (Paramount film co-starr- ing Loretta Young and Alan Ladd) This film brings Ladd back to the screen for the first time since his discharge from the service -— and with one difference: he doesn’t play a bad man! As a doct- or, Ladd tries to cure Miss Young of deafness — and, well, you know Hollywood! Loretta Young turns in one of the best portrayals of her career as the deaf girl. Worthwhile. NIGHT CLUB GIRL (Universal film with Vivian Austin and Edward Norris) Country bumpkins make good in Hollywood come hell, leading men and brok- en hearts'. Need we say more? Make up your own mind on this one. GIRL RUSH (RKO film with Frances Langford and Wally Brown) Definitely a lesser effort on the studio’s part. Never- theless, La Belle Langford with the deep, throaty voice does all she can to make the most of the film. GI PHOTO OF THE Top Place in this week’s GI Photo Contest goes to Pfc. T. C. Pickett of the Medics for this picture showing a typical winter scene along Iceland’s rocky coast. To Pfc. Pickett go a carton of cigarettes and an 8 X 10 enlargement.
