On Germany’s Easttern front the main theatre of war is still ln the Ukraine, wliere the Germans report rapid progress towards the ports on the Black Sea. It is obvious that the situation there has deteriorated during the last few days. In Bterlin rumours are circulating that Odessa has fallen, but this has not been c°hfirmed. Although the German communiqué states that the ^azi forces are pursuing the beaten tenemy, neutral correspond- e«ts in Berlin are allowed to wire their papers that the Russians are effecting an orderly withdrawal. hioscow last night confident- ^ predicted that the Russians ^°uld be able to hold tfie lndustrial districts of the Ukraine and that the farmers ^ould carry out the scorched earth policy in other parts of' country. ^HREAT to oil. One span of the bridge, °Ver 300 ft. long, crashed into river taking with it the oil Ihpe line throngh which Con- stanza got its oil supplies. The Germans have demanded that the Bulgarians should send two divisions to the Eastern frcnt although Bulgaria is not at war with Russia. The soldiers are to be sent as volunteers. Reports from Moscow state that all Polish prisoners in Russia have now been released, in a swift implementation of the recent Russo-Polish agreement. Big Battles Are Haging In Ukraine Far East Crfsis -----4,--- “Calm Before Storm”. — Tokio London, August 13th. It was announc’ed in London and Moscow last night that the British Government and the Soviet Government had pled- ged themselves to support Turkey if it was attacked by a European power. The news of this pledge was received with great enthusiasm in Ankara and although formal agreement has not yet been given by the Turkish Govern- ment there is no doubt that it will be gratefully accepted. London, August 13th. Reports from the Far East show that the situation therte is tense. A Japanese naval spokes man is reported to have said that this is not the time to fuss whether Japan should enter the war or not. The present is mer'ely the calm before the storm. There is a limit to Jap- anese patience and when that limit has been reached there will be an explosion. A reporter who has just re- turned from Saigon says the Ja- panese intend ito stajtion 180,000 trioops in Indo-China.
