London, August 13th.
On Germany’s Easttern front the main theatre of war is still
ln the Ukraine, wliere the Germans report rapid progress towards
the ports on the Black Sea. It is obvious that the situation there
has deteriorated during the last few days. In Bterlin rumours
are circulating that Odessa has fallen, but this has not been
c°hfirmed. Although the German communiqué states that the
^azi forces are pursuing the beaten tenemy, neutral correspond-
e«ts in Berlin are allowed to wire their papers that the Russians
are effecting an orderly withdrawal.

“Calm Before Storm”. — Tokio
London, August 13th.
It was announc’ed in London
and Moscow last night that the
British Government and the
Soviet Government had pled-
ged themselves to support
Turkey if it was attacked by a
European power.
The news of this pledge was
received with great enthusiasm
in Ankara and although formal
agreement has not yet been
given by the Turkish Govern-
ment there is no doubt that it
will be gratefully accepted.

Reports from the Far East
show that the situation therte is
tense. A Japanese naval spokes
man is reported to have said
that this is not the time to fuss
whether Japan should enter the
war or not. The present is
mer'ely the calm before the
storm. There is a limit to Jap-
anese patience and when that
limit has been reached there
will be an explosion.
