Community volunteers increase awareness
of Native American Culture
Lt. Cmdr. Kevin Brennan, Patrol Squadron Eight, reads a story about
Native American heritage to 3rd grade students at A.T. Mahan
Elementary School on Nov. 14. The NAS Keflavik Cultural Awareness
Committee sponsored the event to celebrate Native American History
Month. According to Cultural Awareness Committee Co-Chairman
AZCS(AW/SW) Don Massey, military members from various com-
mands on base volunteered their time to help educate elementary
school students about the contributions of Native Americans. “We felt
that reading to the children stories about Native American history and
traditions was a good way to reach the younger community and allow
them to expand their knowledge base about Native American culture,”
said Massey. In honor of America’s first citizens, the month of
November is dedicated to understanding and appreciating the Indian
people and the cultural and spiritual heritage they embodied.
