Talk of the town answers questions and concerns
The Naval Media Center’s radio program,
“Talk of the Town” airs Wednesdays at 2
p.m. on K104FM, Thunder 1530, and
Roller Channel 9. Last Wednesday,
JOCS(SW) Trish Huizinga from the Naval
Media Center and JOCS Vince Dickens
from The White Falcon were the special
guests. Here are some of the community
issues and concerns they discussed:
• I heard something about a pre-teen
program but I don’t have much infor-
mation. Can you tell me anything about
this new program? The MWR Open Rec
program began Oct. 14. The hours are
2:30-5:30 p.m. This program is for youth
ages 10-12 with an ID card. The days of
operation will be Tuesdays and Thursdays
at the Youth Center. Youth will be able to
do homework, watch TV, play video
games, board games, and socialize with
their friends.
• New AFN channels: AFN Movies and
AFN Family are two new products from
AFRTS Defense Media Center. AFN
Movies will steal some of the movies from
Spectrum and add more. AFN Family will
be more cartoons and programming
geared towards children and AFN
Spectrum will look a little more adult-like.
It’s going to be a great addition to our line-
up and will start in the spring.
• White Falcon: Customers get three
newspapers in one. A lot of that has to do
with good management practices and cus-
tomer feedback. We have the editorial sec-
tion which is about 40 percent of the paper
and that’s the stuff my journalists write.
MWR puts together the Leisure Section
that tells you about your recreational
opportunities, and the publisher lays out
the ads that pay for the paper.
• What is the possibility of getting DSL
internet on the base? MWR is working
on adding an ADSL high speed connection
to our service. It is estimated that MWR
can offer the service by the end of
February 2004.
• I don’t care for the music on K104.1.
It’s too grating for me. What other
choices do I have? Can you change
what you play? Radio programming is a
challenging thing. Everyone has their per-
sonal favorite kinds of music. We have
different kinds of radio products. We have
Thunder 1530 AM, K104, and the cable
radio. If you look at all the vehicles that
we have chances are you’re going to be
able to find what you like. With cable
radio you get 14 new radio stations.
• White Falcon Stories: We put every
phone call or email idea into our pool that
we review each week during our editorial
meeting. For each issue, we work to try
and mix different commands and make
sure more people are getting covered. We
depend on a lot of people to give us those
ideas. Just remember, The White Falcon
and the Media Center are two separate
commands. So if you call in with a story
idea for the Media Center please take that
extra second to call The White Falcon or
email at us at pao@idfcfk.navy.mil. Also if
you are calling us, call the Media Center
as well.
• What is up with the lettuce at the com-
missary? It’s always brown and slimy
and seems like they stock it that way.
Does every shipment come in slimy or
does the commissary hope to sell the let-
tuce on display before they put out the
good stuff? They inspect the fruits and
vegetables for quality during their receiv-
ing process. There was a time during
Hurricane Isabel that the produce that we
received was over a week old, resulting in
poor quality. The contributing factors to
the brown and slimy parts of the lettuce
are tight packing and bruising during ship-
ping. Although it’s time consuming they
re-work the lettuce by peeling the outer
layers and rewrapping it if possible.
• What will daylight savings time mean
to my TV? Oct. 26 is the big day when the
United States falls back one hour. Our
programming will also change by an hour.
The local stuff that we produce will air an
hour later and the programs you watch on
AFN will be on at different times.
• White Falcon Deadlines: For classi-
fieds and News You Can Use items, our
policy says by 5 p.m. Monday. We need
your items in because the paper has to be
at the publisher at noon on Tuesday. We
do our best to bend the policies in favor of
the customer if they have something hot
and send it Tuesday morning. The best bet
though is to get it in by 5 p.m. Monday.
• White Falcon Salute to Excellence: We
made an editorial decision to print all the
names so everyone gets in the paper. We
then go back and pick one person for an
in-depth personality feature and focus on
what the person did to deserve the award.
Everyone can be included now.
Look in next week’s edition for the results
of the next “Talk of the Town.” E-mail
your questions or concerns to nmcfeed-
back@naskef.navy.mil or call the Naval
Media Center during the broadcast at
4615.
