A variety of plant fossils, includ- ing giant ferns and tree trunks, have been found in the Antarctic. There are also quantities of coal, which are formed from plants. This and other evidence would indicate that as late as 100 million years ago Antarctica was covered by an extensive rain forest. Food Management Team Visits Naval Station Galleys A Navy food management team from Norfolk, composed of Lt. K.W. Lerner, SC, CSCS(SS), J.J. Schnoebelen and CSC R.H. Brooks, has been visiting the naval station since Feb. 6. The team arrived for a two week stay at the request of the Naval Station’s Commanding Officer, Capt. Ralph W. The mission of navy food manage- ment teams is to assist ships and shore activities in raising the stan- dards of food service, achieving economy and increasing efficiency. Primary emphasis will be given to on-the-job training of food service personnel; particularly in the areas of general mess administration, menu planning, food preparation and ser- vice', sanitation, care of equipment and record keeping. The team also stresses the effi- cient use of trained manpower, raw materials, culinary tools, as well as continuous training and super- vision of personnel as a means to a more effective and efficient gen- eral mess operation.
