available to most of the world.
The information used to formulate the forecasts
comes from varied sourses. Most obviously are the
visual sightings and observations made every hour.
Three passes a day by the Itos I satellite provides
either visual pictures during daylight or infrared
photos during darkness. In another method, read-
ings from weather stations throughout the world are
teletyped and received; the information is then
used to plot charts to formulate an overall pic-
ture of the weather pattern.
In addition to the Navy personnel, there are
approximately 25 Icelandic civilians under the lea-
dership of Borgthor H. Jonsson. The separate groups
