Iceland
celebrates
in the air
By JOSA Paula Ritrovato
Iceland celebrated its 50th
anniversary of commercial flight
with an air show at the Reyjkavik
airport Saturday.
About 15,000 fpectators turned
out to see the planes of Norway,
Denmark, Germany, the U. S. and
Iceland perform in the celebration.
TURNING OUT FOR the 50th
Iceland commercial flight
anniversary celebration is
a crowd of 15,000 (above)
and a German C-160 trans-
port awaiting for things
to get off the ground.
The Icelandic stunt plane,
FT-UFO (right) and its
pilot amazed the crowd.
An all afternoon affair
resulted in a large turn-
out (below) and success.
The air show started at noon
with a criss-cross formation of
about 20 small Icelandic planes
that swept across the sky.
Other individual performances
were made during the afternoon. A
mid-air refueling process was dem-
onstrated by Detachment lA's
HH-3 Jolly Green Giant (heli-
copter) and HC-130 Lockheed plane.
Also the Green Giant lowered and
lifted some of its crew from 100
feet above ground.
The star of the show was Ice-
landic stunt pilot Elias Johnsson
and his sporty CAP 10, TF-UFO
plane.
The show was sponsored by the
Iceland Private Pilots Association
and the Iceland Historical Aviation
Society. The scheduling officer
was Balder Sveinsson.
