General guidelines: surface
parcels should be mailed from Oct.
15, no later than Nov. 10. SAM
parcels and voice recordings should
be mailed from Oct. 20 to no later
than Nov. 25. PAL parcels should
be mailed from Oct. 30 to no later
than Nov. 30. Letters/cards and
priority parcels should be mailed
The Post Office states that pa-
trons should "mail early" and avoid
the last minute rush which not only
slows the system but also causes
unnecessary waiting in line at the
Post Office and extra work on the
base postal personnel who are
already busy during the holiday
mailing period.
VP-5 begins
To begin its Keflavik deploy-
ment, Patrol Squadron Five, alias
"The Mad Foxes", arrived in Iceland
yesterday. Homeported at Naval Air
Station Jacksonville, FL, the
squadron uses the Lockheed P-3C
"Orion" aircraft.
Headed by Commander W. R.
CDR W. R. SPEARMAN
deployment
Spearman, VP-5 commanding officer,
the squadron is beginning its 11th
deployment to Keflavik.
The departure from Jacksonville
marks the end of 11 months of mis-
sion training and aircraft main-
tenance by the "Mad Foxes".
From NAS Jacksonville, the
squadron has deployed to Bermuda,
Sicily, Spain, the Azores, Puerto
Rico, Iceland, Newfoundland and
the Philippines. During this
time, the "Mad Foxes" received the
Battle Efficiency "E" in 1951,
1952 and 1958.
VP-5 aided in recovering Ameri-
ca's first astronaut, Commander
Alan B. Shepard Jr., May 5, 1961.
In April 1977, the "Mad Foxes"
journeyed to Naval Air Facility
Sigonella, Sicily, where the
squadron supported the North At-
lantic Treaty Organization and
the United States Sixth Fleet.
The squadron participated in
major anti-submarine warfare ex-
ercises; Dawn Patrol, National
Week XXIII, Sharem XXIII and
Anti-Submarine Warfare Week.
The expertise with which VP-5
aircrews performed their mis-
sions resulted in Commander Six-
th Fleet presenting the "Mad
Foxes" the "Hook-Em" award for
"ASW operational proficiency
and excellence."
Exchanges were conducted with
maritime squadrons of the United
Kingdom and France; one P3-C
"Orion" was displayed at major
air shows in Germany and Italy.
