Vikings conquer homecoming
challengers
Led by Prince Parker, the A.T.
Mahan Vikings played ball control
football to defeat the Naval Fa-
cility Bulldogs, 20-0, last week
in a happy homecoming for school
alumni.
Quarterback Donn Haviland mixed
up his plays well with reverses,
passes and off tackle plunges in
his opening series of plays to
move the ball rapidly into Bull-
dog territory. However, the
drive stalled when NavFac put up a
stiff defense against the rushes
of Parker and fullback Mike Barry.
The Bulldogs started its own
drive, which faltered when Parker
picked off a Bulldog pass and
raced 60 yards to the Bulldog 15-
yard line.
On a reverse, Berry Jondahl
raced around right end of the Bull-
dogs for the score.
Parker dove off right tackled
for the two-point conversation and
an 8-f lead that it never lost.
The next Bulldog drive stalled
when lineman Tom Waldron picked off
another pass, which gave the Vik-
ings another chance to score.
Haviland then took to the airways
against a strong wind but found the
range when he connected with Buddy
Gilbert, who made a brilliant catch
taking it to score. The play cover-
ed 30-yards.
The try for point failed when
Mike Barry tried to run the ball in
but was nailed short of the goal
line.
The half ended with the Vikings
leading 14-0.
The second half opened*with the
Vikings taking the ball against the
wind, sticking to a ground game
that ate up the clock.
Dashes by Barry and Parker kept
the Bulldogs on defense mostly.
When the Vikings lost control
of the second half, Coach Dougherty
let his second unit play; and, much
to the surprise of the crowd, the
secondary String also provided a
strong offensive punch. This unit
was led by reserve quarterback Mike
Tice, a transfer from Forrest Sher-
man High School Naples, Italy, who
marched his unit to the Bulldog 20-
yard line.
He was supported by Jim McDowell,
Gary Godwin, John Kehoe, Dwight
Godwin, Richard "Tex" Joseph, Robert
Dixon, Scott Adams and Larry Kimes.
These Vikings were at the Bulldogs'
door when the game ended.
At the homecoming dance Saturday
evening, Birgit Fladager, a senior,
was elected homecoming queen. Her
attendants included Carrie Waldron,
Marie Maticko, Karen Maticko and
Mary McNeer.
