Lefler sets pace
Food services attacks 960th
Food Service blanked league-
leading 960th AWACSS Monday night
and moved to within a half game of
first place in the American League
of Intramural bowling. It is the
second week in a row that AWACSS
has been shutout.
Dan Lefler led the attack for
Food Service against AWACSS with a
564 set, which included games of
209 and 211. Jack Roberts followed
with a 205 and 546 and Danny Nigdao
added a 212 and 525. Bob Fulwider
was high for AWACSS with a 554, Ed
Jones added a 514 and Steve Wheeler
and Mike Luce both had 512. Wheel-
er also had a 211 game.
Bruce Michaelson rolled a 257
game and two 211 games and ended
the evening with a totrid 679 ser-
ies as AFI won three from AIMD.
Jim Kearney followed with a 227
game and 590 set. Ironically, the
game AFI lost was when Michaelson
rolled his 257.
Rounding out the remaining lea-
gue play, Tony Cuerpo rolled a 507
as the Commissary won a 4-0 deci-
sion over NavFac. Phil Blauvelt
led the Fac with a 525 and Bob Go-
din had a 505. Navy Broadcasting
shutout VP-23 behind Gary Wilson's
226 game and 557 set and Joe Carl-
son's 204 and 537. Mike Varney's
535 led NavCommSta to a 3-1 victory
over the 57th FIS and Comptroller
and IDF split their match with W.C.
York rolling a 202 game during the
contest.
In the North Atlantic League,
Edquardo Layug rolled a 225 game
and 601 set to lead Club Management
to a 4-0 decision over Public
Works. The win moved Management to
within two and a half games of
league-leading CommSta NRK. NRK
was a 3-1 winner over the Marines.
NRK was led by Doug Drewry's 524,
Vern Matteson's 519 and Cecil Pres-
ley's 201 and 504.
In other league action, Robert
Acevedo rolled a 208 and 507 to
give NavFac #3 a shutout victory
over IsComlce. Supply #3 blanked
Comptroller, Air Ops was a 3-1 win-
ner over AIMD and CFK downed the
Black Knights for three. Ed Sibel
was high for CFK with a 203 and 574
while Ken Shockey topped the Black
Knights with a 519 and Harris Hutto
had a 503.
The race for first place in the
National League continues to be a
three team affair. Medical and AFI
are tied for first place while
CommSta Admin is only one game
back.
Medical and CommSta split their
match with Mike Perkowski's 516
topping Medical. AFI took advantage
of the draw between the other two
tejms, winning three from the IDF
Chiefs. Vince Feaster rolled a 202
and 558 for AFI and Jerry Hansen
was high for the IDF Chiefs with a
508.
In other action, Van Sullivan
rolled a 215 and 547 as the CFK
Chiefs downed rival CFK for three.
Greg Patrick had a 203 for CFK.
The 57th FIS Good Guys bested Rec-
reation for three even though Bert.
Quintans came in with a 216 and 539
for Recreation. Mel Davis shot a
519 as Dental shutout Supply #2 !.and
Joe McGlynn's 508 helped the sluic-
ing Supply Chiefs to a split with
the Navy Exchange.
In the International League, Jay
Norris had a 504 as first place
Specomm took three from Navy Wea-
ther.
The race for second place con-
tinued with AFI winning three from
NavFac and maintaining their slim
one game advantage over Det. 14,
who was a 3-1 winner over NavSta
Admin. Darwin Ray led AFI with a
531 and Chuck Parker was npxt with
a 529. NavFac was led by Gene Ho-
ward with a 207 and 528 and Ray
Thigpen with a 223 and 500. Jay
Freeman topped the 500 mark for Ad-
min with a 502.
In remaining action, Public Works
downed the NSGA Mat Rats for three;
the Marines dropped a 3-1 decision
to the 960th AWACSS even though
Gary Basil had a 206 and 504 for
the Marines. The Hot Rocks from
NSGA won three from Grindavik with
Ted Bonesteel rolling a 517 and
Scott Metzger a 513 for the Hot
Rocks.
Fulwiders’ 670 wins
best ball tournament
Bob and Patty Fulwider.won the
best ball tournament held last
weekend at the Arctic Lanes. They
rolled a 670 series. •
Bob then teamed with Willa Du-
gan to take second place, only
three pins off the pace, with a
667.
Betty Henderson and Ron Gulick
finished third at 662, Willa and
Bob Godin Were fourth with a 653
set, Linda Patrizi and Skip Groce
were fifth ,at 646 and Willa scored
again, this time with Bob Shaffer
and a 640 series.
Awards were given on the basis
of one award for each ten entries.
Hunt first in
base table tennis
A base-wide double elimination
table tennis tournament, cosponsored
by the US0 and the Youth Center, was
held Sunday. Winner of the tourna-
-ment was John Hunt of VP-23 who beat
Jim Dutton of AFI in the final match
21-11 , 21-12. Hunt advanced through
the tournament without losing a game
enroute to his first place finish.
In third place was Fred Martin, also
of Che strong AFI contingent, who
was ousted by Dutton in the most
closely contested match of the day,
23-21, 24-22. Hunt and Dutton had
won previous USO tournaments and
were the pretourney favorites.
