FOUR CAREER-MINDED STUDENTS—Are Chandra Parker (upper left photo- and
clockwise), Gerald Hansen, Steve Demott and Todd Porter. Taking advantage
the opportunities available to them for training in a future career,
he-job they can 'taste' what just might be right for them- and come
'ahead of the game' in the end. Chandra works part-time at the White
con office. She is responsible for much of the art work illustrated in
the newspaper. She designed the 1979 Christmas issue cover of the Falcon,
as well as designing the TV Guide page's NBS 'emblem.' Gerald has part
time status at AFRTS. He tapes various spots (brief messages between a
song or announcement) used by the staff in the station- among other tasks
assigned him as needed. Steve makes himself useful in the 57th FIS' AGE
shop during his training hours. Pictured, he makes the final tune-ups on
an engine he completely overhauled himself. And Todd is a welcome assist-
ant in the Dental department. As he observes the dentist treat a patient,
he aids with the tools the professional utilizes during the treatment.

During the past few weeks, A. T.
Mahan High School has been undergo-
ing some changes. The cause of the
transformation was a decided lack of
school spirit. The student council
began looking for something to raise
interest, and they came up with "Op-
eration Apathy."
If you were to walk through the
hallways of the high school, you
would hear many students asking one
another, "Which house are you in?"
The reason for this query is that
the school has been divided into
four 'houses,' or groups. The
houses are christened Loki, Thor,
Baldur, and Magni, and each one has
its own colors. In every house,
there are members from all the
grades, and the four houses compete
against each other for points. At
the end of the school year, the
house with the most points becomes
champion.
On Thursday, March 6, the houses
held their first competition. There
were contests of both brain and
brawn. Swimming and hasketball were
in the athletics department, and
brain teasers such as "Basketball
questions," a trivia contest, and
"Proverbs," a game in which one
player illustrates a proverb while
his or her teammates try to guess
what it is, were held.
Also, there was an orange pass.
When the points were tallied, Loki
came in first, Baldur second, Thor
third, and Magni fourth. The day
was an enjoyable one, and a lot of
spirit was displayed.
Planned for the future are vol-
leyball, racquetball, a spelling
bee, and other contests. At pre-
sent, students are busy competing in
doubles and singles badminton. "Op-
eration Apathy" has acheived its
goal of reducing boredom throughout
the school, and the planned competi-
tions will keep the students occu-
pied for the remainder of the school
year.
