and his Weapon Systems Officer,
Capt. Jim Davenport were able to in-
tercept a Soviet "Bear" bomber air-
craft in Icelandic airspace east of
Hofn. "If we had been delayed a few
minutes more on the ground, we could
have ended up in a tall chase on the
Bear and he might have gotten away."
‘The maintenance alert force res-
ponsible for Sloe Gin 02's re-launch
was made up by MSgt. Doug Hueber,
SSgt. Lawrence Aiello, SrA George
Martinez, SrA Luc Bedard, and SrA
Richard Wilson.
"I was really impressed," com-
mented Lt. Col. Barry Swarts, Squad-
ron Operations Officer, "We had
written 02 off and thought 01 -would
have to go single ship. It might be
possible to abort a Phantom and get
airborne faster than 02 did, but
I've never heard of it."
