AF members are
encouraged to extend
Air Force personnel with over-
seas return dates of June, July
and August are encouraged to ex-
tend their tours to September or
later, because of shortfalls in
fiscal 1980 military personnel ap-
propriations .
Your tax returns
may be erroneous
The Internal Revenue Service has
incorrectly applied the earned in-
come credit to numerous service-mem-
bers overseas who are not eligible
for the credit. In most instances,
the servicemembers did not initially
claim the credit, but it has shown
up in refund checks and statements
anyway. Be aware that the IRS is
correcting the error and will send
notices demanding a return of the
overpayment, which they are legally
entitled to receive. It is suggest-
ed that if you receive such a cred-
it, keep a copy of the refund check
and the statement, deposit the ex-
cess refund in a savings account,
and wait for the IRS notice. You
will have 10 days after the notice
to return the erroneous payment, but
you can keep the interest you have
earned.
Absentee voting
permitted by all
Did you know that there are over
500,000 elected officials in the
United States? Yet fewer than half
of the eligible voters actually
vote. Only a few years ago, you had
to be physically present at the
polls to vote. However, Congress
has tried to make sure that service-
members and their eligible depend-
ents are not prevented from partici-
pating in an election by requiring
the fifty states to permit absentee
voting. Take advantage of the op-
portunity to be heard on some of
those 500,000 officials by picking
up an absentee voting application
from your Departmental Voting Repre-
sentative or the Legal Office.
Defect in blankets explained
There has been much confusion on
the reported defective Essex elec-
tric blankets to date. An earlier
announcement stated that some Essex
electric heating blankets may be de-
fective; the defect is that the
heating coils (NOT the wire to the
plug) are less than 9" from the bot-
tom (foot) of the blanket. Custom-
ers In possession of such a blanket
were asked to return them to the Ex-
change for full credit.
Unfortunately, this information
was misinterpreted, and all owners
of Essex brand electric blankets
were returning them for credit. If
you think you might have a defective
Essex brand electric blanket, please
call Mr. Kelley, NEX Merchandise
Manager at extension 4577 for fur-
ther information.
Gasoline price up
