Story by J03 Pat Del Grosso
An annual radiothon is perhaps
the biggest event on the NATO Base
that helps Navy Relief and the Air
Force Assistance Fund. Who would
expect that this year's total would
exceed the $14,000 mark in 100 hours
of Radiothon '80.
J03 Kathy Schoenlein kicked off
Radiothon '80 as some big money was
pledged from the start with the Ma-
rine Hymn being the first popular
request. Phones started to ring as
pledges anywhere from $1 to $25 were
called in to request their favorite
songs.
From the very start, it seemed
that the radiothon would either be a
MARINE-A-THON or a ROCK-A-THON. By
three o'clock, the amount pledged
had reached $700. The Marines were
working hard to keep the Marine Hymn
in the top-of-the-hour slot and to
keep Patrol Squadron 46 in check
with the dedication of Aerosmiths'
"My Big Ten Inch."
The Marines were taking over the
show with the first two songs of
each hour. It was the half hour
slot that provided an exciting chain
of events. "Tie A Yellow Ribbon"
was to last only a short time. With
the help of the friends and neigh-
bors of Skip Groce, he was "Back In
The Saddle Again" with a shaky imi-
tation of Gene Autry's well known
rendition. It was the Naval Faci-
lity who pledeged $ 359 to hear tne
tune "Hot Stuff" by Donna Summers
that replaced "Tie a Yellow Ribbon."
