Five persons have been selected
from approximately 2,500 NATO base
enlisted personnel as the outstan-
ding Iceland Defense Force Military
Personnel of the Quarter April—June
1980.
Selected were: Sergeant Denny H.
Eplin, USMC, Legal Clerk, Marine
Barracks; Radioman First Class
Thomas N. Riley, Watch Section
Supervisor, Naval Communications
Station (H-l site); Storekeeper
Third Class Debra M. Stephens, Ma-
terial Division, Air Operations De-
partment; Staff Sergeant Deborah A.
Walsh, Weapons Controller Techni-
cian, 932nd ACWS, Rockville Naval
Installation; and Senior Airman Mary
T. McHugh, Air Surveillance Techni-
cian, 932nd ACWS, Rockville Naval
Installation.
During this past week in cere-
monies conducted in each selectee's
work area, Rear Admiral R.A. Mar-
tini, Commander Iceland Defense
Force, presented them with plaques
and certificates of commendation.
These certificates cited each for
their outstanding professional and
military performances, leadership
abilities, and involvement in
command and community activities.
Petty Officer Stephens, who hails
from Grey Eagle, Minn., joined the
Navy in September 1978, and she has
been with the Air Operations De-
partment since Dec. 1978. She was
advanced to Petty Officer Third
Class after her selection as Sailor
of the Quarter.
Storekeeper Third Class Stephen's
citation read: "She performs all
the Air Operations Department supply
functions, including managing a bud-
get of more than a half-million dol-

lars. These duties are normally as-
signed to a First Class Petty Of-
ficer. Through her meticulous at-
tention to detail as a budget mana-
ger, she has saved the department
$3,500 by identifying and correc-
ting overcharges.... She has earned
the respect and gratitude of her en-
tire department for being an excel-
lent storekeeper and an exemplary
sailor....Her exemplary attitude,
demeanor and appearance make her
the prime example for her peers to
follow."
Sergeant Eplin, who is a native
of Morris, Ill., joined the Marines
in June 1977 and has been with the
Marine Barracks here since March
1980. He is legal clerk and legal
advisor to the Commanding Officer
Marine Barracks.
Sergeant Eplin's citation read in
part: "Tasked with managment and
timely preparation of the myraid
of administrative functions associa-
ted with his speciality, he attacks
all his responsibilities with an ag-
gressive and positive attitude. Ar-
ticulate, mature, and enthusiastic
he possesses a personal sense of
pride both in the quality of his
work and in his level of physiscal
fitness."
Radioman First Class Riley, who
hails from Gastonia, N.C., joined
the Navy in August 1965, and he has
been with Naval Communications Sta-
tion here since September 1979. He

is Watch Section Supervisor at the
H-l receiver site.
Petty Officer Riley is als|
avid sportsman and adherent of
Navy's Physiscal Fitness Program.
He is active in such division ac-
tivities as bowling and softball,
which he coaches. He umpires Little
league baseball games and plays
racquetball frequently.
