Friendship tourney
held in Keflavik
Over 100 participants took part
in the IceDeFor Friendship Golf
Tournament held this weekend at the
Keflavik Golf Course.
The golfers came from eight clubs
in Iceland as well as the NATO Base.
They competed in four groupings.
Womens, Class A (handicaps 1-9),
Class B (handicaps 10-17) , and Class
C (handicaps 18-24).
Jakobina Cudlaugsdottir from the
Westman Islands topped the women
competitors with a net score of 84.
The Class A crown went to Hallur
Porinundsson of Keflavik with a net
score of 66. The Class C winner was
Akraness' Gudmundur Valdiumarsson
who shot a net score of 65.
NATO Base golfers fared well in
Class B competition and Jack Crist-
well took first place with a net
score of 66. Walter Hocketstaller's
handicap-aided 70 was good for
second place. Mike Barry and Bob
Lynn also finished high in the stan-
dings. Both men shot 72.
The second annual Fall Run-Off was held Monday morning with 50 runners
testing their abilities in the 10,000 meters and two-mile runs.
John Tiso (above left) duplicated his win in the first run-off held
earlier this year, and again took top honors in the men's 10,000 meters.
His winning time of 36:48 was one minute and 20 seconds faster than the
second place finisher, Red Pittman, who completed the race in 37:28.
Danny Eplin ran the six mile course in 38:50 and finished in third place.
In master's competition for the 10,000 meter run, John Ireland finished
first with a time of 38:17, while Jerry Kallas and James Shaffer took
second and third respectively. Kallas completed the course in 40:19 and
Shaffer in 46:26.
Only two women took on the grueling six-mile course, and Maureen
(above right) was the first to finish at 54:52. Her opponent Olivia
finished at 62:06.
Placing first in the two-mile men's race was Charles Racousin (
He covered the two miles in 11:30. Andrew Pauszman was next at 11:55 and
K. Turner's time of 12:01 was good enough for the third position.
Fred Kjer won his second race this year and placed first in the mas-
ter's two-mile. He was clocked at 12:08. J.E. Armwood finished next with
a time of 13:36 for second place, and Ernie Draeger's 14:28 earned the
third position.
Sandy Draeger was the top finisher for the women competitors in the
two-mile with a time of 18:16. She was followed closely by Diana McKeb-
bens and seven-year-old Crista Rasmussen. McKebbens' time was 19:20
while Rasmussen completed the race in 19:21.
Santiago-Pinto & Lewey win racquetball
Angel Santiago-Pinto and Dennis Lewey were the top performers in last
weekend's LEACH sponsored Racquetball Tournament held at the Base Gym.
Santiago-Pinto defeated Jim Allen in the finals of the Class A division
in three games for his third title this year. Santiago-Pinto made it to
the finals with wins over Paul Saucedo and Allen. Allen beat Bruce Ware
and Danny Messer before suffering a loss to Santiago-Pinto. He then moved
into the loser's bracket, where he defeated Paul Saucedo to gain the re-
match with Santiago-Pinto in the finals. Allen finished second while
Saucedo took third place honors.
In the Open Division, Denny Lewey battled his way through the loser's
bracket to meet Mike Bursick in the finals and he won in an extra playoff
game 15-10, 11-7 and 11-9 for first place.
Bursick had wins over Sigmund Schade, Greg Beckham, Dennis Mauxy and
Lewey to enter the final round. Lewey defeated D. Nestle, Dan Rhodes and
Mike Fedak before losing to Bursick. He then defeated Rhodes for the
second time and earned the right to meet Bursick in the finals. Bursick
was second and Dan Rhodes placed third.
