Photography -- an artistic expression
by JOSN Pam Belford
Certain jobs in the Navy can be
fascinating. An example of this can
be seen right here in Keflavik. PH2
Jay W. Shoots' job at the Iceland
Defense Force photo lab develops
new dimensions after working hours.
Jay, a native of Romulus, New
York, said his interest in photo-
graphy was sparked when he was four-
teen, after a cousin moved away and
left him a darkroom. He said, "I
just started spending a lot of time
in there. I liked being able to
make images."
He took photography classes in
high school and taught photography
to handicapped students when he was
a senior. After high school, Jay
attended the New England School of
Photography in Boston, Massachusetts
for a year. He joined the Navy as
a photographer's mate and attended
Navy schools for his field. Although
he received a lot of training, he
says, "I learn something new on the
job every day."
Jay has taught several classes
since he joined the Navy. The
object of his lessons, he said, is
the technique of photography. Jay
said he feels his students should
learn the basic technique before
they can learn to express themselves
with a camera. He teaches a class
at the hobby shop and says he
enjoys helping other people learn
how to take good photos. He added,
"It's a way of learning for me."
He said his style of photography
comes from within. "I consider
photography to be a personal ex-
pression of feelings, thoughts, and
ideas," he added. Jay says he con-
siders photography a way of life
and he always expresses himself
through his photographs.
Jay said he knows where photo-
graphy is going in the future.
"People will understand it more and
come to terms with photography as
an art form," he said.
He is now preparing an exhibit
consisting of photographs taken
during 1980 and 1981. The show
will be in Reykjavik, July 4-22 at
the Galleri Djupid, downstairs in the
restaurant Hornid. The exhibit,
titled, 'Streetlife—Reykjavik 1980-
el 50 Works in Silver, features
people and their way of life in Ice-
land . He intends to move on to
photographing color landscapes for
a future project. ^
Jay plans to pursue the fine art®
of photography after his enlistment^
ends next year.
