The military values efficiency, courage
and dedication in its people more than many
other•qual ities. One staff on the NATO Base
shows more than its share of these traits...
and they have an awesome responsibility --
that of keeping the NATO Base community both
informed and entertained.
These hearty souls belong to the staff
of the Navy Broadcasting Service, Detach-
ment Eight, the Armed Forces Radio and
Television Service outlet in Keflavik.
They have fought through some major los-
ses in personnel since receiving the satel-
lite hook-up from Los Angeles in May. Even
with the short-handedness, they have manag-
ed to increase their television service to
24 hours a day with the addition of the
satellite. That means, of course, that the
station has to be manned 24 hours a day.
How did they do it?
"Everyone on the staff works an average
of a 60-hour week," says JOCS Phil Gallo-
way, the station manager.
"We have lost a lot of people to other
commands... we have a couple of people in
Beirut and two others went back to the sta-
tes for school... and we lost another for
humanitarian reasons. We're working with a
skeleton crew right now and for TV that
means running all the shows, off-lining the
satellite transmissions, doing the local
productions and the local news," explains
JOCS Galloway.
Although the satellite has freed the
station's news department from covering in-
ternational and national news, they now are
deeply involved in prodiving local coverage
of events of interest to the NATO Base com-
munity. This has increased the time spent
shooting and editing for local news broad-
casts.
Because of the continuing personnel prob-
lems it has been necessary to shuffle per-
sonnel around in the various departments.
Staffers spend a few months in the televi-
sion, radio, and news sections. The system
has its benefits, says Senior Chief Gallo-
way, because Det. 8 personnel -- by neces-
sity -- broaden their experience base.
He also notes that Keflavik is the only
broadcasting detachment in the world that
runs two different TV channels; and it is
one of a very few that maintain 24-hour
