Mother 's Day

A day set aside for the pur-
pose of honoring motherhood.
That is what Mother's Day stands
for.
The idea for the holiday is
credited to Miss Anna M. Jarvis
(1864 to 1948) from Philadelphia,
Pa. She was a native of Grafton,
W. Va. Anna went to Philadelphia
in 1904, where her mother died
on May 9, 1905.
On the anniversary of her
mother's death, Anna held an in-
formal memorial meeting of friends
and in 1907 a church service was
held at Grafton on the anniver-
sary of the death. Because of
her efforts, Philadelphia observ-
ed the day, May 10, 1908.
Anna then became the mission-
ary of the idea, writing thou-
sands of letters to influential
men and interviewing many public
men to plead for the observance
of the day. In May 1913, Pen-
nsylvania made it a state holi-
day.
In 1913, the United States
Congress recommended that the
second Sunday in May be made a
national holiday honoring moth-
ers.
The first national Mother's
Day was proclaimed by President
Woodrow Wilson on May 9, 1914.
It is customary for sons and
daughters to wear a pink carna-
tion if their mothers are living
or a white one if they are dead.
This year it will be celebrat-
ed on Sunday, May 12.
