Naval Facility holds 'Open House'
By Lt. (j.g. ) S. Matulonis
An "Open House" was celebrated
at the Naval Facility (NavFac), in
honor of Military Spouse Day (May
23rd). This was the third con-
secutive year that NavFac has
sponsored the event. Plans are
to make MSD an annual celebra-
tion at the unit.
Military Spouse Day, first cele-
brated in 1984, when President
Ronald Reagan signed a procla-
mation at a White House ceremony
designating this day (May 23), as
a day of appreciation for the
countless personal sacrificies
military spouses have made
throughout the years in support of
the Armed Forces. Secretary of
Defense, Caspar W. Weinberger,
in turn, has made Military Spouse
Day an annual event in the Depart-
ment of Defense.
The NavFac open house was held
to show the unit's appreciation of
all the understanding and support
provided by local spouses. With-
out it, the NavFac would not be
the professional, efficient unit it
is today, according to Naval Fa-
cility Commanding Officer, Cmdr.
Charles Schindler.
During the open house, NavFac
was open for spouses, depen-
dents, other family members and
friends of unit personnel to view
several unclassified areas.
Some 85 guests attended the
event.
Cmdr. Schindler welcomed the
first group of visitors at 10:30
a.m., with praising remarks for
their support. Then the guests
were provided with guided
tours through the designated ar-
eas. They were shown the oper-
ations watch floor, the quality
assurance division, the commun-
ications sections,the training and
administrative offices, security,
the facilities maintenance, the
equipment room, the supply
depart., and the calibration lab.
At the conclusion of the tour,
the guests were treated to re-
freshments provided by NavFac
personnel.
"The open house allowed each
command member to show off his
areas of expertise," concluded
Cmdr. Schindler.
