already exhaustive work and social schedule, Thor
contributed still more of his time to children from
such countries as Bolivia and Bali through helping to
found a Foster Child Program in the NATO Base
Kiwanis Club. He was attending school in California
during the 1973 eruption of Heimaey in the Vestman
Islands, but when he returned he lead a collection,
as treasurer for the Kiwanis Club, to aid the
islanders and raised over $17,000.
Mr. Halldorsson is fiercely proud of his Icelandic
citizenship. He joined the Independence Party as a
teenager, was president of the Independence Youth
Group in his native Hafnarfjordor, and still remains
active in ploitics today. He joined the Icelandic
Youth Hostel movement some forty years ago,
traveling all over the island with young people and
even lead a group of 24 youngsters on a bicycle
tour of Scotland for three weeks in 1951.
From the late 50's, he has organized what NCS
personnel refer to as "Thor's Tours", when he and
his wife, Dia, personally escort members of the
command on one-day, weekend jaunts through the
local countryside. From a handful of fully-loaded
private cars bouncing along unpaved roads to the
comfort of today's touring buses, his way of
sharing his pride and knowledge of Icelandic
folklore and traditions is direct.
In his quarter century of service, Thor has
witnessed 15 NCS change of commands, more than a
half dozen senior enlisted retirements and the
November 1972 arrival of the first enlisted woman
June 20, 1986 The White Falcon
to serve in Iceland.
He recalls the modernization of NATO Base
aircraft from the P-40 "Warhawk” and P-51
"Mustang" fighters of WWII (and corrugated steel
plate taxiways used to keep their wheels from
sinking into the mud), to the assignment of the
EC-121 "Super Constellation” and F— 104 "Delta Dart"
predecessors of the present day E3A AWACS and
F— 15 fighter squadrons.
"Ask Thor" is the most echoed phrase among
Icelander and American alike at NCS. In the words
of a fellow worker, Mr. Gretar Felixsson, "He is
the father of NCS.“
