Catch the spirit of volunteer ism in January By J02 Colleen “Ghostwriter” Casper You’re late for work. Your car gets stuck in the snow only to add to your distraught state of mind. Who comes along to help you out? Simply stated, volunteers. Your child enjoys seasons of active sports involvement Sports activities do not just happen overnight, they could potentially take weeks of planning. These are made possible because volunteers donate their time and efforts to causes they believe in. “Volunteers make up a large part of the community. With the current drawdowns and decreasing funds, the community relies heav- ily on its volunteers,” said BMCM (SW) Jhon Ward, Command Master Chief, Iceland Defense Force. A 24-year veteran and a vol- unteer for more than eight different organizations, he stated, “Volun- volunteers.” Who would raise the money and spend the time to expand, children’s oppportunities in extra-curricular fields? Volunti Who helps out with free chilli suppers and holiday meals for the sin’ and unaccompanied? You guessed it, community volunteers. People volunteer to help out with many activities on the base ranging from sorting mail to cooking for bake sales. More than 5,000 people attended the fourth of July carnival which was organized by the efforts of hundreds of volunteers. The Keflavfk Athletic Youth Association, an organization which provides hockey, volleyball, basketball, soccer and baseball for young children, is made possible through volunteers. Bowling leagues are coordinated and organized by volunteers. The next time you are wondering what you can do with your spare time, volunteer to help out an organization and give a little something back to the community. teers are an integral part of the community making up 20 percent of the population. We would not be operating at such a high rate without See page 4 for a listing of volunteer organizations on base Rules for properly using trash dumpsters It has been noted that there have been problems with proper utilization of the trash dumpsters on base. The following are rales for proper use of trash receptacles. 1. All garbage or trash will be sealed in boxes or bags and placed inside the dumpster! 2. A truck will be sent as soon as possible to empty it. 3. Children and adults that are unable to properly open and close the doors on dumpsters will not utilize them. 4. No open containers with loose objects will be deposited in dumpsters. 5. Empty boxes will be broken down into flat packs prior to placing into dumpster. 6.
