Keeping fit pays off for mind and bodm
By J02 Carlos Bongloanni
When it’s cold outside and dark for most of
the day, the temptation to make like a potato
and vegetate on the living room couch in front
of a TV is greatly increased. Unfortunately,
the resulting lack of physical exercise is bad
not only for the body, but also the mind.
Medical doctors agree, regular exercise re-
duces tension and stress - two conditions that
appear quite often in this winter environment
To help motivate military personnel sta-
tioned here to a higher standard of physical
fitness and overall health, RADM Michael D.
Haskins, Commander, Iceland Defense Force,
recently instituted the “Outstanding Club.”
Anybody who scores an outstanding or higher
on their physical readiness test will be recog-
nized in the The White Falcon.
“The particular scores aren’t the major
emphasis,” said RADM Haskins. “I’d like to
see everybody’s individual scores improve
whether they’re above or below outstanding.
I’d like people to look at me and say, ‘Hey,
he’s pretty old! If he can score an outstanding
on the test, I should be able to score that too. ’”
An emphasis on physical fitness has always
been a major part of military life. In recent
years, it’s taken on greater importance; that
importance is magnified even more in Iceland
because of the added stress of dealing with
winter conditions.
LCDR Tim Kobemik, a family practice
medical doctor at U.S. Naval Hospital,
Keflavik, strongly recommends physical fit-
ness in coping with stress. “Regular exercise
is a very simple concept,” he said. “It’s as
simple as getting yourself to eat your vege-
tables, yet it’s extremely important. Exer-
cise is directly related to the psyche. It
maximizes your mental energy while reduc-
ing stress. The bottom line is you feel better
about yourself.”
The persistent cold and gloomy darkness
are here to stay for a little while longer, but
that’s no reason to hybemate on a sofa all
winter. A little exercise everyday will not
only improve your mind and body, but it
might also help you get your name on the
“Outstanding Club” roster.
