HITE FALCON Icelandic phrases of the week: How do I get to.- Hvernlg kerast 6g til... (Kavemig kemst ee-egg til...) Where are we? Hvada stadur er petta? (Ka-va-tha sta-thur er thet-ta?) Where is the nearest hospital? Hvar er nsestl spitali? (Ka-var er nice-tea spee-ta-ly?) VoL 52 No. 05 Serving the Iceland Defense Force Community February 5,1993 How to use the Emergency Recovery Service By AMH1 Don Arnold! Vice-President, Rocky Road Four Wheelers You have just been blown off the road by a strong gust wind and now you’re stranded, what do you do? You’re stuck in a snow drift in the middle of the road and blocking traffic, what do you do? You stay with your vehicle until Navy Security or a member of the Rocky Road 4- Wheelers Emergency Recovery Service (ERS) come to the rescue. When they drive by, tell them that you need help. During the winter months, the Rocky Road 4-Wheelers tave the ERS operating during adverse travel |nditions. They try to help those in need get vehicle back on the road, if possible, i he ERS is activated by the Chief of Police through the ERS chairman. Each vehicle in ERS is checked by the ERS chairman and by the Security section leader before it is al- lowed to go out on recoveries. There are strict guidelines that each vehicle must ad- here to before that vehicle is allowed to operate. There is no charge for this service. Please remember that the people in ERS are volunteers and don’t have to help you out if you don’t want their assistance. When an ERS person shows up to help you, they will ask you to sign a release form to protect them from claims. If you don’t sign the release, they will not help you. You will recognize ERS members as they must use a yellow flashing light on their vehicle. After they help you, they will give you a blue car. withtheirnameonitandtheclub’slogo. This is for your own records. If the person who shows up to help you doesn’t ask you to sign a release, and doesn’t give you this card, or use a yellow flashing light this person is not a member of the ERS and isn’t authorized by the security officer to assist you. When the base condition goes into Travel Condition HA, the security officer will call on the ERS chairman to activate the ERS team. Both the ERS team andsecurity patrol- men will also be looking for anyone in need of assistance. The team will be in radio contact with security at all times during ad- verse conditions. Please remember to stay with your vehicle - don’t leave it unless ab- solutely necessary. If you’re close to a build- ing go in and call security patrol to come by. Helpful hints: Carry extra clothes, a blan- ket and flashlight in your vehicle. If possible, keep your gas tank at least half full, this is so that if you are stranded you can run the engine for about 10 minutes every half hour if neces- sary to keep warm, (make sure that the tail pipe is clear before running the engine). Don’t walk alone in severe weather. It is easier to find you if you’re with your vehicle. Remember, ERS members are trained and prepared to help you. Rescue squadron undergoes name change The 56th Air Rescue Squadron (ARS) recently joined Air Forces Iceland (AFI) and is now known as the 56th Rescue Squadron (RQS). Due to this change the 56th RQS now falls under the Air Combat Command instead of the Air Mobility Command. The realignment involves the in-place paper transfer of personnel and equipment These actions mote closely align rescue operations with the combat missions they support The change reinforces the basic Air Force leadership philosophy of “One base, one wing, one boss.” Lt. Col. James A. Sills, Director of Operations, said, “The change means we work directly for Air Forces Iceland Commander, Col. Thomas L. Allen. “In the past if I needed facilities for the hanger, Col. Allen couldn’t do anything for me, and I had to go back to my command and put a request through them. Just the simple fact that AFI is here and knows how I operate makes the difference,” he said. k The official name change ceremony was held last Friday at the Community Center. The 56th RQS is responsible for a variety of search and rescue activities. The ACC commander will act as an executive agent for the Air Force Chief of Staff on all search and rescue matters. Recycling center reopens The Nayy Exchange (NEX) Recy- cling Center reopened Tuesday at a new location. The center is now located in build- ing 2355 near the Iceland Prime Con- tractors buildings. A combination of old age and heavy snow buildup on the roof of the origi- nal building, caused flooding. Upon inspection Public Works officials had to close the facility. The new location follows the regu- lar hours of 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Satur- day. Signs leading to the center are posted starting at the NEX Service Station. For more information call NEX Admin, at ext. 7062.
