Several commands and organizations from
Naval Air Station (NAS), Keflavik joined
together recently to sponsor a Fire, Safety
and Health Fair at the A. T. Mahan High
School.
For nearly two hours, students viewed a
variety of displays presented by NAS’s Fire
Dept., the Red Cross Organization, Air Forces
Iceland and NAS Safety Offices, as well as
Navy Security Police. In addition. Col. Robert
J. Gmyrec, Commander, AFI Support Group,
awarded first place prizes to the winners of
the Safety Slogan Contest.
Tony Conoscenti took top honors for the
eighth graders with his line, “Dress right or
you could get frost bite,” while seventh grade
winner, Adam Cheek, wrote, “Don’t let the
ice slip your mind.” Each winner received
two, free movie passes to the base theater, a
$5 NEX/ Baskin Robbins gift certificate, and
a Navy Exchange gift certificate.
According to Hafstein Hafsteinsson, safety
specialist, NAS Safety Office, the slogan
contest not only benefited the kids by giving
them awards, but it also created awareness.
“Participating in a contest like this, gets their
minds thinking about safety,” said Haf-
steinsson.
TSgt. David Gilbert, AFI Weapons Safety
Officer, thought the fair was a great success.

SAFETY
“The kids had a good time. They asked a lot
of intelligent questions and learned some
valuable information. Our goal is to en-
lighten people to the importance of safety
from the earliest ages on up. Last year was a
good year for safety. The Department of
Defense had the fewest fatalities ever,” said
Gilbert.
