School teams travel to UK,
gain needed experience
By J02 Carlos Bongioanni
A.T. Mahan was one of six high schools
that sent teams to compete in the Department
of Defense Dependent Schools (DoDDS)
Atlantic/United Kingdom (UK) Basketball
Tournament.
Although both the boy’s and girl’s teams
were winless in the tournament, According
to girl’s coach Martha Grindle, the experi-
ence was worthwhile. “Both teams worked
hard and kept their focus. Even though they
had not played in as many games as the other
teams, they did well,” said Grindle.
One bright spot of the tournament was
Dana Mecham who won an award from the
referees for Best Sportsmanship. The Girl’s
roster also included Emily Allen, Dawn
Bussey, Beth Campbell, Barbara Cohn, Helga
Hayes, Carmela Lard, Mindy Manes, Phor-
sha Peel, Kelli Quimby and Ashly Sacrider.
The boy’s team coached by Bill Riggs
consisted of Jeff Bigos, Todd Butler, J. J.
Davenport, Roger Gillies, Ben Grimes, Elon
Jenkins, Tony Johnson, John Perry, Frederic
Reeves, and Brad Roundtree.
In other action, five girls from A. T. Mahan
competed against four high school teams in
the UK Conference Cheerleading Competi-
tion. Keisha Morrow took top honors as All
Conference Cheerleader. Addie Cameron,
Joy Conoscenti, Ame Hinshaw and Erika
Looney were the other four members of the
squad.

competed in their first DoDDS UK
tournament, gaining the experience
needed to lead the team next year, as
returning veterans.
NATO women win big
in Brawdy tourney
The NATO women's basketball team returns
from Brawdy, Wales and celebrates their
recent victory. After two years of cancelled
tournament opportunities, the team finally
got the chance to play competitive basket-
ball. Lastweekend, the women’ steamcrushed
their opponents as they rolled to a 5 -0 record
at the Northern European Sports Conference
held in Brawdy, Wales. Like a flood, the
NATO women proved to be too much for their
competitors. Naval Security Group Activity
