Base Sports School teams travel to UK, gain needed experience By J02 Carlos Bongioanni A.T. Mahan was one of six high schools that sent teams to compete in the Department of Defense Dependent Schools (DoDDS) Atlantic/United Kingdom (UK) Basketball Tournament. Although both the boy’s and girl’s teams were winless in the tournament, According to girl’s coach Martha Grindle, the experi- ence was worthwhile. “Both teams worked hard and kept their focus. Even though they had not played in as many games as the other teams, they did well,” said Grindle. One bright spot of the tournament was Dana Mecham who won an award from the referees for Best Sportsmanship. The Girl’s roster also included Emily Allen, Dawn Bussey, Beth Campbell, Barbara Cohn, Helga Hayes, Carmela Lard, Mindy Manes, Phor- sha Peel, Kelli Quimby and Ashly Sacrider. The boy’s team coached by Bill Riggs consisted of Jeff Bigos, Todd Butler, J. J. Davenport, Roger Gillies, Ben Grimes, Elon Jenkins, Tony Johnson, John Perry, Frederic Reeves, and Brad Roundtree. In other action, five girls from A. T. Mahan competed against four high school teams in the UK Conference Cheerleading Competi- tion. Keisha Morrow took top honors as All Conference Cheerleader. Addie Cameron, Joy Conoscenti, Ame Hinshaw and Erika Looney were the other four members of the squad. Wrestlers finish on top By David Nojaim The A.T. Mahan High School Wres- tling Team (Vikings) once again com- peted successfully in the DoDDS, United Kingdom, Scholastic Wrestling Tournament at Lakenheath High School in England on February 13. The Vikings did exceptionally well, earning an honorable mention in team standings. Four of their six wrestlers placed in the top 2 slots in their respec- tive weight categories. Shannon Reaves (152 pounds), Brandon Reaves (140 pounds) and Matt Allen (135 pounds) each earned first place, with the tournament’s Most Valuable Player award going to Shan- non Reaves. Jeremiah Perez (130 pounds) earned an exciting second place finish in an unforgettable 31 to 29 overtime decision. The other two varsity wrestlers, Alfred Denny (125 pounds) and Wil- liam Westervelt (145 pounds) each competed in their first DoDDS UK tournament, gaining the experience needed to lead the team next year, as returning veterans. NATO women win big in Brawdy tourney The NATO women's basketball team returns from Brawdy, Wales and celebrates their recent victory. After two years of cancelled tournament opportunities, the team finally got the chance to play competitive basket- ball. Lastweekend, the women’ steamcrushed their opponents as they rolled to a 5 -0 record at the Northern European Sports Conference held in Brawdy, Wales. Like a flood, the NATO women proved to be too much for their competitors.
