The U.S. Naval Ship, Sealift Carib-
bean, docked at Helguvik pier last week
to dispense seven million gallons of jet

nature arrive twice yearly to provide
fuel products to the base. The 26-man

AFI now becomes 35th Wing
By J02 Colleen “Ghostwriter” Casper
The 35th Wing will become a reality effec-
tive today at 2 p.m. when all Air Force units
permanently assigned to Iceland will follow
the Air Force wide policy of ‘erne base, one
wing, one boss’.
Col. Thomas L. Allen, Commander, Air
Forces Iceland, said, “Because of the change
we will operate like the wings do back in the
United States. The only significance is that
instead of having only a name, we will be a
number as well.”
The 35th Wing designation is an Air Force
administrative change and will not effect the
position, title or mission of Air Forces Ice-
land which is to deter aggression, stabilize
the North Atlantic region, and protect sover-
eign air space over Iceland through combat
surveillance, air superiority and rescue forces.
All elements of the 35th Wing and other
aircraft temporarily assigned to Iceland will
continue to fall under the operational control
of Air Forces Iceland which reports to the
Commander, Iceland Defense Force.
1st Lt. Stephen V. Miliano, Executive
Officer, Air Forces Iceland, said, “The change
gives us a title to go along with our designa-
tion. It is similar to saying I own a car, now
I can say I own a ’93 Cadillac.”
This differs from other single, mission-
oriented wings because the 35th Wing will be
a self-sufficient, diversified wing. “We will
now be a composite wing with certain struc-
tural elements which we have always had,
now we are just being recognized for it,” Col.
Allen added.
A biproduct of the change is the creation of
the 35th Maintenance Squadron.
The ceremony will be held in hangar 830,
all personnel are invited.
