56TH RQS rescues Bulgarian at sea
By J02 Carlos Bongioanni
U. S. helicopters from the Iceland Defense
Force flew nearly 1,000 miles in seven hours
last Friday, in response to a severe medical
emergency, and rescued a Bulgarian seaman
from a fishing vessel approximately480 miles
west of Iceland. The man was flown to
Reykjavik for hospital treatment.
Nine Air Force crewmembers were on
board the two HH-60G rescue helicopters
from the 56TH RQS (Rescue Squadron), and
an additional nine were on board an HC-130
mission control and refueling aircraft.
“The patient had a history of kidney stones
resulting in an obstruction of the urinary
tract,” said Maj. Brian Parsa, Flight Surgeon
for the Air Force’s 35th Wing. “In addition,
his temperature was elevated and this led me
were able to get him to Reykjavik City Hos-
pital without any complications.”
SSgt. Frank Bernal, the Flight Engineer for
the rescue said the hoist from ship to heli-
copter was nearly routine. “At one point, the
seat became wedged against the aircraft re-
sulting in a minor momentary delay, but
other than that, we had no problems,” stated
Bemal.
According to IstLt. Damon Reynolds, Co-
pilot of the backup helicopter which assisted
in the rescue, the flight could set a squadron
record. “In terms of distance, this is probably
the longest rescue to date,” said Reynolds.
Each Pave Hawk had to be refueled twice
by the tanker. Without the support of the
HC-130 and its crew from the 71st Air Res-
cue Squadron out of Patrick Air Force Base,
Fla., the rescue would not have been pos-
