Top 10 Raquetball Tournament
Story and photos by J02 (AW) Natalie Dias
A men’s racquetball tourna-
ment was held on Saturday and
Sunday at the Naval Air Station
Keflavflcgym. The double-elimi-
nation tournament was open only
to members on the gym’s Top 10
ladder.
“We did it to shake-up the
ladder,” said Art Benjamin, the
athletic director. According to
Benjamin, the tournament gave
the men an opportunity to com-
pete against members further up
or down the ladder in an attempt
to advance to a higher ranking. A
player could possibly move up
the ladder several steps in the
course of only one weekend.
Players not only moved up —
they also moved down. Men in
the top 10 who did not participate
on Saturday or Sunday were
moved out of the top 10. Players
in spots 11 through 13
were moved up to fill the
empty eight, nine and 10
slots.
Matches between John
Wyatt/Mike Kilpatrick
and Don Fontaine/Steven
Nurre kicked-off the tour-
nament Saturday. Tom
Slusarchyk and Efrem
Coley remained unde-
feated throughout Satur-
day, while Kilpatrick,
Fontaine, Nurre, Rick
Golden and SteveMarotte
were all eliminated.
The tournament resumed on
Sunday, and competition was
stiff. “I think this is the best tour-
nament we’ve had,” said Wyatt
“It’s been much more competi-
tive.”
The competitive tension con-
tinued as John Karabetsos, the
number-one man on the ladder,
found himself facing Coley, the
number-two man. Not only
would Karabetsos have to face
Coley once, but twice in hopes of
keeping his number-one slot.
“It feels good,” exclaimed
Coley after taking the number-
one spot by beating Karabetsos
15-6,15-11. “I work hard on my
game. I’ve only been playing for
14 months, but I’m constantly
working every day on tightening
up holes in my game.”
The next racquetball tourna-
ment will be in late January or

ond place trophy from Art Benjamin.
Efrem Coley, tournament champion, looks for an ace on the serve.
early February and will be open
to all base patrons. For more
