December’s feedback:
The skipper answers your questions
k Q. Can we have personal mail boxes like
me Air Force has?
A. As the host command, NAS Keflavfk
currently processes the mail for all depart-
ments and tenant commands on board NAS
Keflavfk. This means we sort/process mail
for the Air Force, too. Because we do all of
the processing of the mail, they need only dis-
tribute it NAS Keflavik is not staffed to
process and distribute mail to all individuals
on the air station, and the cost of doing so is
prohibitive. In addition, if mailboxes were
set up for each individual onboard the air
station, it would be difficult logisdcally for
personnel from some of the tenant commands
to collect their mail.
Q. Can something be done about the water
in the sinks at Air Ops? It smells like sewage.
Can the mini-mart
stock more milk?
A. Trouble calls
have been submitted to
fix the problem in the
sinks. The mini-mart
has started to order
I more milk.
f Q. Lights have been
out in the Flower Housing area for a few
weeks, and it is quite dark. Will they be fixed
soon?
A. A short in the lighting system caused
fuses to blow in the main control box. The
short was repaired and the fused replaced.
Q. Can parking be assigned in the housing
areas? Can something be done about the
water in front of Building 1083?
A. Assigned parking is not a viable option
in the housing areas due to the snow and ice,
which would cover the painted markings.
The cost of maintaining the markings is
another factor. Also, it would be quite diffi-
cult to police the areas to ensure only appro-
priate personnel parked in assigned spaces.
A maintenance service contract will be used
to make permanent repairs to fix the standing
water problem in front of Building 1083.
Pallets are being used as an interim fix.
Q. Can the bus stop in the back of Build-
ing 926 be repositioned to the end of the
parking lot?
A. A concrete slab would have to be put in
k^ace to locate a bus stop at the end of the
■irking lot, and currently funding has not
oeen allotted for this purpose. In addition, the
slab would have to be built in warm weather.
The occupants of Buildings 926 and 927 can
submit a self-help project for the bus stop,
considered a quality of life project
Q. Can the hours in which the buses run be
extended? Can the NEX get another barber?
A. Based on a month-long collection of
ridership data, it is unlikely bus hours will be
extended due to the low number of persons
riding the buses. It is not cost effective to pay
for bus services that receive severely limited
usage. The NEX generally has at least two
barbers on duty all the time. There are times
when there is only one barber, however, there
are also times when three barbers are on duty.
All patrons may make appointments, and will
be attended at the time of the appointment.
A. It would not be feasible to assign
parking in the housing areas, therefore better
communication between neighbors will alle-
viate marry of these difficulties.
Q. Can the cigarette machine be moved to
an area where the kids won’t have access to it
A. The cigarette machine was relocated
Dec. 31.
Q. Are the bathrooms in the Viking Mall
going to be renovated?
A. The ladies bathroom is now service-
able, although it remains to be wallpapered.
The mens room requires further repairs,
however, other rest room facilities are avail-
able in the bowling center.
Q. Is the beauty shop planning to hire an
ethnic hairstylist?
A. The beauty shop currently has a hair
stylist who is experienced at ethnic hair care,
and the NEX is advertising for an ethnic
stylist
Q. Can Public Works build a bridge over
the ditch behind Building 926, so kids can use
the bus stop in Bird Housing?
A. It would be more feasible and desirable
to place a bus stop at the end of the parking lot
for Building 926 to eliminate most of the
traffic through the area by the ditch.
Q. We are not getting the word when the
hot water is going to be turned off in our
housing unit Can we have this announced?
When will the commissary stock more items
for breakfast?
A. Scheduled outages are relayed by way
of the roller as well as through the senior
occupants. For unscheduled outages due to
immediate maintenance problems, it is more
difficult to notify residents, however, the
outages are normally short in duration. The
commissary continually receives shipments
to restock the shelves with current or new
products.
Q. Can something be done about the way
the taxi drivers are speeding through the
housing areas?
A. NAS Security has increased the efforts
to catch the speeding taxis on radar, however,
just the presence of the security cars tends to
cause people to slow their speed.
Q. Can something be done about the
people who use the parking spaces which are
cleared in front of specific housing areas?
Q. Why is there only one person in the
theater concession stand when the lines are
very long, especially during the showing of
very popular films?
A. In the future, more than one person will
attend to theater patrons during popular,
crowded movies.
Q. Who sets the closing times at the Fleet
Reserve, and who enforces them?
A. The board of directors sets all policies
for the Fleet Reserve, in compliance with the
wishes of the commanding officer. The duty
bartender is responsible to enforce the clos-
ing time.
Q. Why are the speed limits reduced
during travel condition m?
A. Reducing speed will increase safety.
Q. Can something be done about the
people who pass school buses that are offload-
ing children in the driveway area in front of
the school?
A. Elementary school teachers watch the
driveway areas to discourage this from hap-
pening. It is not manpower feasible for NAS
Security to post a security patrolman in the
area.
