The New Year’s Basketball Tournament
ended with the NAS team emerging victori-
ous, with a 45-39 squeaker over Supply "A".
This was the 13th round in the four-day tour-
nament
After Supply downed NAVFAC, 37-32, in
the loser’s bracket, the tourney moved on to
game 12. Supply then took on undefeated
NAS for an all-out battle for the winner’s
trophy. Had NAS cleaned up in this game,
they would have been crowned the champi-

ons. If Supply beat the
favored team, an additional
“if” game would be played.
As it turned out, Supply
dribbled, sank three-point-
ers and ultimately outma-
neuvered NAS to faring the
7 p.m. game to a surprising
result, 51-44.
Commenting on the ac-
tion, Supply’s assistant
coach, Darryl Scott, said,
“We always had the chance
to win. I never doubted
whether or not we would
make it to the champion-
ships.”

Obviously the optimism
displayed by Scott was
typical of his players.
The tension was amazing as the ricochet-
ing game kept the spectators on their feet As
the game went into the second half, NAS
knew that their competition was serious and
was not going to give up just yet
“If there’s a chance to show our stuff, it’s
in this, the final game,” Scott enthusiastically
added. When the buzzer accomplished its
mission at the conclusion of the second half,
NAS triumphantly left the court, handing
AF/Navy Supply a 45-39 loss.
Ray Nunley, playing forward for NAS #2, leaps to retrieve theA
ball from an opposition player.
Their valiant attemptbrought Supply within
mere points of the championship trophy, but
even these warriors succumbed to the unde-
feated NAS force.
“We weren’t expected to go this far in the
tournament, especially after an earlier loss by
15 points,” said Coleman Evans, coach for
Supply. “The guys managed to come to-
gether as a team, and employ less of their
individualistic skills. With three games in
one night, we gave it all we had.”
