The White Falcon - 11.11.1994, Blaðsíða 6
Capt. W. Robert Blake Jr., commanding
officer of NAS, recently answered base resi-
dent’s questions on Feedback. Transcripts
of Feedback are provided to The White
Falcon by the NAS Administration Office.
Q: Why aren’t the gas prices at the NEX
Service Station determined in accordance
with the formula given in Navy regula-
tions?
A: According to the Navy Exchange
Manual Publication, the NEX is allowed
to markup gasoline 40 percent. The NEX
is currently running at a 31.9 percent
markup. Gas prices recently dropped and
the NEX passed a 22-cent savings to the
customer, while reserving an extra penny
to help offset high labor costs.
Q: Can the NEX increase the selection of
software?
A: Software deliveiy was delayed because
of a transition in suppliers. However, the
NEX received $8,000 worth of software
that is currently on the sales floor. An
additional $5,000 in software is in transit.
Q: Are the roads near the Youth Center
and the Puffin Pre school going to be
paved?
A: Preparations have already been made
to repair the road to the Youth Center.
Paving will occur this month, weather per-
mitting (dry and at least 50° Fahrenheit).
The road to the Puffin is under review by
Public Works, however, funding is not
available at this time to repair the black-
top.
Q: Why are the alterations at the dry
cleaners so expensive, and why do they
take so long to be completed?
A: The price of alterations at the NEX
laundry is less expensive than similar ser-
vices off base by as much as 50 percent.
The extra time required to complete alter-
ations was because of summer vacations
and a limited number of personnel.
Q: Can the base buses begin earlier and
run more frequently at the close of busi-
ness?
A: Public Works is currently negotiating
bus service with a contractor to begin in
January 1995. This suggestion is under
strong consideration to be the first mod^
fication to the contract. I
Q: Since Gerber recalled some of their
pacifiers, why are Gerber pacifiers still
being sold in the NEX?
A: The manufacturer specified UPC
01500002500-35 Nuk pacifiers as defec-
tive, and they were immediately removed
from store shelves and stockrooms.
Customers were notified of the actions
taken and that a full refund is available.
In the interest of safety, the NEX also
pulled other non-affected pacifiers from
the same manufacturer. Substitutes have
been purchased from another company.
Q: Why do American cars have yellow
tags?
A: Yellow tags identify cars that are
imported into Iceland duty-free. They
also assist Icelandic authorities in identi-
fying cars which are not required to pay
road tax. White tags are available to
Americans, but appropriate taxes must be
paid in this case.
High school senior to attend youth £
leadership forum in Washington, D.C.
By J02 Kevin A. Mills
A senior at A.T. Mahan High School has been picked as one
of only 350 students in the United States to attend the National
Youth Leadership Forum on Security and Defense (NYLF/SD)
next year in Washington, D.C.
Krys M. Nelson will attend the conference Feb. 28 through
March 5 to experience how the U.S. plans for peace and pre-
pares for crisis.
NYLF/SD is a private, non-profit organization dedicated to
helping prepare promising future leaders.
“It is a unique opportunity,” said Nelson. “I have been trying
to get a chance like this for a long time. It took a lot of work.”
In preparing for this opportunity, Nelson has maintained a
grade point average of 3.28, is an active cross-country runner and
basketball player for the school, and has been a member of the
student council.
“I think it’s a once-in-a-Iifetime opportunity,” said Norla
Strasbaugh, the high school counselor. Strasbaugh added that it
is also a great opportunity to see military hardware and to meet
with policy makers.
While at the conference, Nelson will, among other activities,
go inside the Pentagon for high-level briefings with senior DoD
officials, examine the latest military hardware, review strategies
and tactics, and meet with policy makers.
Next fall, Nelson plans on attending the University of Texas,
Arlington to major in criminal justice.
Nelson’s parents, Mike and Sindy Nelson, are accepting dona-
tions to help with the tuition to send Krys to the forum. Any
person or organization wanting to help can contact the NelsonJ
at ext. 6097 or write a letter and mail it through local channels tm
